Clemson students protest removal of tampons from men’s restroom

A group of Clemson University students protested the removal of tampon dispensers from the men’s library bathroom in response to complaints from conservative student groups.

Holding brightly colored signs that read “Belittle periods” and “Hello, it’s the 21st century,” about 50 students demonstrated on campus Wednesday to demand that school administrators reinstall feminine hygiene dispensers.

The dispenser was removed after Clemson College Republicans complained it was found in the library’s men’s bathroom.

“If you’re not aware, Clemson University has tampon/pad dispensers in the MEN’s restroom located in Cooper Library. We really live in a [clown] the world,” student group posted on X on Sept. 13

Take Back Pride, which organized the protest, said the sanitary products were “unfairly” removed from the restrooms and called for them to be reinstalled, and the College Republicans were reprimanded for their role in the removal, according to College Fix.

“The queer people on this campus aren’t just going to magically disappear,” student organizer Pan Tankersley told the College Fix.

“So instead of acting against us, like taking menstrual products from the men’s bathroom, making people feel unwanted, there needs to be support for the community that is already fighting to feel safe here.

“If anything, the university needs to step up and needs to protect its students.”

Take Back Pride claims the machine was vandalized after the student group complained about it. The dispenser was removed three days after their complaint.

Trevor Tiedeman, chairman of the conservative group, told WSPA: “Men are men. Women are women. Of course men cannot menstruate. Of course, we are vocally against it. Of course, these people think otherwise, and that is why they are here protesting us.

“We’re just standing up for biological reality. They reject what we believe in, and so they want us off campus.”

Tiedeman also suggested the workers behind the installation of the dispensers should be fired, according to the College Fix.

State Representative April Cromer saw their complaints and approached college officials

Cromer posted a photo of five dispensers lined up at the X on Sept. 16, writing: “@NickyMccarter, and @ClemsonPrez are just as shocked as I am that these dispensers are in the men’s restroom. @ClemsonPrez has removed this unauthorized dispenser IMMEDIATELY! Thank you. @ClemsonCRs for bringing this to my attention. A man cannot be a woman, ever, menstruate!”

A Clemson spokeswoman said the college has no plans to reinstall the machine.

The dispenser was installed last November by the Graduate Student Government, according to the student newspaper The Tiger.

Former GSG President Kaitlyn Samons believes the school issued the dispensers to stay out of politics and support South Carolina government.
