The co-owner of a Maine bar targeted by a mass shooter Wednesday night said he still feels like “this whole thing was a nightmare,” according to local reports.
Kathy Lebel, who co-owns Schengees Bar & Grille Restaurant in Lewiston, was not at her place when the shots rang out, but was told someone entered the bar and “started shooting,” before staff fled in fear, the Lewiston Sun Journal reported.
“It’s just a fun night playing cornholes … it’s the last thing you expect, right?” Lebel told the newspaper. “I still think this is all a nightmare.”
He was one of dozens waiting outside Central Maine Medical Center in an effort to get more information about family and friends.
By early Thursday, police had not released the number of people killed in the shooting, but law enforcement sources said at least 22 were killed and dozens more wounded at the Sparetime Recreation bar and bowling center.
The two shooting scenes are about five miles apart.
Robert Card, 40, has been identified as a person of interest in the heartbreaking bloodbath.
He is considered by authorities to be armed and dangerous.

“We’re all waiting and we’re not learning anything,” he said. “They won’t tell us if he’s alive, if he’s in critical condition, if he’s dead – they won’t tell us anything.”

Melinda Small, who owns Legends Sports Bar and Grill near Sparetime Recreation, told The Associated Press employees quickly locked the doors and about 25 patrons moved away from the doors after patrons heard gunshots in the bowling alley.
“Honestly, I was in a state of shock. I was lucky that my team responded quickly and everyone was safe,” Small told The Associated Press. “But at the same time, my heart breaks for this area and for what everyone is going through. I just feel numb.”
