The United States Coast Guard responded to a capsized vessel near Sitka, Alaska on Tuesday afternoon, where they found two dead and rescued three others.
An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew from Sitka Air Station initially responded to the scene near Chichagof Island at 5:15 p.m. local time, and recovered the three people from the water at about 5:50 p.m., according to a statement from the Coast Guard. .
They were then transported to the Sitka airport, where they received medical treatment.
According to Coast Guard Capt. Darwin Jensen, commander of Sector Southeast Alaska, the two missing people were found the next day dead in the cabin.
“It is with heavy hearts that we received word of two people in the cabin from our Sitka Fire Department search partner,” Jensen said. “We send our support and strength to the family at this time and thank our partner agencies for their assistance in this case.”

After receiving a report of the vessel capsizing, Coast Guard Cutters Douglas Denman and Kukui and an HC-130 from Air Station Kodiak responded to the scene on Tuesday.
They were able to locate the ship’s drift and began searching the area for other potential victims. Sitka Air Station conducted additional searches Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
By Wednesday evening, two individuals were still missing. Sitka Firefighters and Alaska Wildlife Troopers then deployed unmanned underwater drones to search the vessel, where they eventually were.

Recovery operations for the deceased will begin as soon as the situation at the scene improves, the Coast Guard said.
According to the Coast Guard, the water temperature at the time of the incident was about 44 degrees, and the air temperature was 31 degrees. Early weather included wind as 8-10 knots, causing 9 foot seas.
