At the age of 4, Custer began racing midgets. He won the USA National Young Guns in 2011. In addition, he won 10 races and was Rookie of the Year.
He debuted in the K&N Pro Series East in 2013 at Bristol. In 2013, he won pole position and led every lap, becoming the youngest K&N Pro Series race winner by six months.
In 2014, Custer won the Pro West opener at Phoenix International Raceway, defeating Brennen Newberry and Greg Pursley. Additionally, he joined Haas Racing Development for nine NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races. In 2014, he ran the Martinsville Kroger 250.
