Colombia mudslide kills at least 33, injures dozens of others

At least 33 people have been killed and dozens injured after a mudslide in Colombia, authorities said.

A landslide in the western part of the country hit a busy municipal road on Friday in a mountainous area connecting the cities of Quibdo and Medellin in the Pacific Province of Choco, according to reports.

Rescue teams and canines from across the country have been sent to the scene to search for the injured, the government said in a statement.

The tragic death toll was announced by Colombian Vice President Francia Márquez on X, who posted that there was an “ongoing” search for the victims, some of whom were minors.

The mud also completely swallowed several cars on the road, according to officials.

The cause of the mudslide was not immediately known. The country’s Defense Department reported on Friday night that rain in the area made rescue operations difficult.

A video posted on X shows the moment the side of the mountain slid over the highway, covering several cars. The Associated Press could not confirm its authenticity.

The National Disaster Risk Management Unit initially said in a statement that at least 18 people had died and at least 35 injured people had been sent to hospital.

President Gustavo Petro wrote on X that his government would provide support to deal with the “horrible tragedy.”
