Colorado ballot ruling on Trump will only ‘drive up’ more GOP support: ex-Bush advisor Karl Rove

The Colorado Supreme Court’s decision to boot Donald Trump from the state’s 2024 presidential primary could create a fundraising goldmine for him and boost his standing with fellow Republicans, a top GOP adviser said.

“It serves to energize Trump supporters and give the former president an opportunity to raise more money from people who will suddenly be angry about what’s going on,” Karl Rove, a former senior adviser during the George W. Bush administration, told Fox News’ “The Story” on Saturday.

“This does not seem fair, it does not seem appropriate. And the response is to increase the number of presidents – the number of ex-presidents.”

The 4-3 decision, handed down Tuesday afternoon, cited Section 3 of the Civil War-era Fourteenth Amendment, commonly known as the Insurrection Clause or Disqualification Clause, which bars those found to have engaged in “rebellion or insurrection” from holding office.

The Democrat-appointed judge on the Centennial State’s highest court concluded that Trump’s actions on January 6, 2021, “constituted an overt, voluntary and direct participation in rebellion.”

The Colorado decision was automatically delayed until January 4 to give Trump time to file an appeal to the US Supreme Court, which his team had promised.

Rove also said he believed Democrats risked appearing hypocritical, citing a series of former Democratic lawmakers whose rebellion clause could also be banned from office.

Among them, he said, was former Confederate Vice President Alexander Hamilton Stephens, a Georgia Democrat who was elected to the House of Representatives after the Civil War ended.

Stephens resigned after nearly a decade in the House to eventually become governor of Georgia.
