Colorado burglar busted after using Uber as getaway car for $8K plumbing tool heist

A Colorado crook with thousands of dollars in stolen goods walked right into police hands after he was caught trying to use Uber as a getaway car, police said.

The reckless thief was rummaging through a plumbing shop in suburban Denver last week when he called a rideshare driver to pick him up.

The store’s owner called 911 after noticing a hole in the business’s fence and capturing surveillance footage of the burglar inside.

When local Wheat Ridge police arrived on the scene, they found an Uber driver waiting nearby.

He told police his passenger “Jose” was heading toward the car.

“Are you looking for an Uber?” an officer was heard asking the suspect to enter bodycam footage shared by the department.

The man — wearing a hooded black sweatshirt and balaclava pulled down — turned his gaze to the side and hid his hands in his pockets.

“Uh – no,” he stammered.

He then gave the officer the fake name “Raul” as he took a few steps back and away from the police.

He was immediately arrested by the officers, but assured them that he was not trying to relax.

Jose doubles down on his innocence and claims he was just on his way to his mother’s house.

When told he matched the thief’s description, he insisted he was not the man they were looking for, despite not bringing identification to prove he was “Raul.”

The contents of his backpack, however, revealed the thin remark.

“This backpack is full of Milwaukee gear,” an officer is heard saying as he rummages through the loot.

Inside, police found more than $8,600 worth of power tools.

He was taken into custody, where a fingerprint scanner confirmed his true identity.

“Probably not the best idea to have Uber pick you up at the scene,” Wheat Ridge Police said on social media.

A 26-year-old man named Jose was arraigned the next day on multiple charges, including theft of more than $2,000, criminal trespass and false reporting to authorities, court records show.
