The leader of the Colorado Republican Party on Thursday questioned the surprising decision of Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) to drop out of her re-election race in the Centennial State’s 3rd Congressional District to run in the more GOP-friendly 4th District.
By making the switch, Boebert would avoid facing Democrat Adam Frisch in a 2022 midterm rerun, whom he defeated by a razor-thin 546-vote margin, and instead compete for the seat being vacated by Rep. Retiring Ken Buck (R- Colo.).
“From a party perspective, we certainly don’t think it’s the best move,” Colorado GOP Chairman Dave Williamson said of Boebert’s 2024 effort during an interview with CNN.
“We feel that he is the best fit for Congressional District 3 and that he is in the best position to win re-election and keep it for the Republicans,” he added.
The 3rd District leans 9 percentage points in favor of Republicans compared to the GOP’s 27 percentage point advantage in the 4th District, according to the Colorado Sun, which cited an analysis of election results from 2016 to 2020 conducted by Colorado legislative staff.

In a Facebook post Wednesday announcing his decision, Boebert argued that “dark money” from “Hollywood elites and progressive funds” is being deployed to personally target him in the 3rd District — where Frisch has raised more than four times as much funding as Boebert in the latest quarter.
He argues that by changing districts, Republicans have a better chance of retaining both seats in Congress.
“We cannot afford to lose the third place and Colorado’s Fourth District desperately craves an unapologetic defender of liberty with a proven track record of standing up for conservative principles,” he said in the post. “We have to protect our majority in the House, win the Senate and win the presidency.”
On Thursday, Colorado GOP Chairman Dave Williamson did not believe Boebert’s decision was the best move for the party. CNN
Boebert doesn’t have to live in the 4th District to represent him, but Williamson suggested that the 37-year-old lawmaker might have trouble defending the change to voters.
“Time will tell if we are right or not, but I think he has a serious challenge on his hands trying to explain to voters [the 4th District] why did he think he had to go [the 3rd District] and has a better chance of keeping his seat in Congress,” Williamson said. “It’s kind of a problematic proposition. But again, it’s something for the voters to decide.”
Frisch, a former Aspen City Council member, blasted Boebert over the action in one X post on Thursday,

“This just proves that Lauren Boebert has never been committed to the CO03 community,” he said. “He’s only in politics for himself.”
“Boebert is scared of CD-3 because he knows he can’t match our campaign’s ability to connect with voters and the hard work we’ve done to give them a common sense voice in Congress,” Frisch said in a separate statement.
