Colt was a two-time Associated Press 2A Offensive MVP and first-team All-state selection as a high school athlete. He was also a player at Jim Ned High School as a junior and senior. From 2006 to 2009, he was a four-year starter for the Longhorns. Additionally, he is the first player in school history to win or share the team MVP all four years. He was awarded a redshirt year in 2005, so he did not participate in the team’s 2005 national championship season. He also ranked third among quarterbacks, behind Vince Young and Matt Nordgren.

Then, in 2006, he was named the University of Texas’ starting quarterback. Colt set a Texas record with six touchdown passes against Baylor on October 14, 2006.
