Comedian Matt Rife Slammed For Sexist ‘Black Eye’ Joke In His Netflix Special

Stand-up comic Matt Rife has drawn the ire of fans for the sexist jokes he makes in his new Netflix special, “Natural Selection.”

Following the release of the special, fans went after the comedian online, saying he was promoting domestic violence.

In a recent interview, Rife doubled down on his comments, revealing that he wasn’t worried about offending certain people with his jokes.

Rife’s latest Netflix special didn’t get the positive reaction he might have hoped for, as fans booed him for making sexist jokes during the show.

The comedian, who gained fame through TikTok, had joked about meeting a waitress with a black eye during one of her trips, per Buzz feed.

Telling the story, Rife said, “It’s pretty obvious what happened. But we can’t forget, like, this is the face of the company? This is the person you’re greeting people with?”

She added, “And my son, who was with me, was like, ‘Yeah, I feel bad for him, man, I think they should put him in the kitchen or something where nobody has to see his face.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, but I think if she could cook, she wouldn’t have that black eye.'”

The comedian continued to grill the woman, saying, “She should have her protection crystal.”

Fans Say Matt Rife Is Promoting Domestic Violence

While Rife tried to lighten the mood by saying the rest of the show wouldn’t be filled with controversial jokes, people on social media weren’t having it.

One fan said, “Matt Rife opened his special with ‘if a woman could cook, she wouldn’t have a black eye joke’. Really? Is this your god?”

A second person said, “I love comedy shows and the trailer makes him look so funny! I got five minutes before I shut it down. If you hate women so much, we’d rather you weren’t around us.”

Some other followers mentioned that Rife is not funny and should learn how to step up his game.

The comedian doesn’t care about being trolled

Despite infuriating fans with his jokes, Rife doesn’t seem to mind. In an interview with various, the comedian explained why he felt this way.

“You have to be yourself and not worry about offending certain people. You might miss a joke that you’re worried might offend someone, but it might make you a million new fans,” the comedian told the publication shortly after the launch of his special.

He added, “You never know what people are interested in, and that’s why you have to go out there and do your comedy and just put it all out there exposed to find your audience.

The comedian also pointed out that vulnerability is very important in the comedy business, adding that it’s important for comedians to “do the jokes you want to tell with your voice, in your comedy, to find out who likes your comedy.”

Rife Overcomes ‘One of the Biggest Misconceptions’ About His Career

Rife also addressed “one of the biggest misconceptions” of his career, which centered on how he “only has female fans.”

He admitted that he had blasted TikTok “is very female dominated”. However, he went on to say that his shows often have both sexes present.

Rife said, “When you come to the show, I mean, it’s 50/50. It’s an outgoing couple. The next group of guys.”

“And that’s one thing I want to tackle in this special is to show people that despite what you think of me online, I don’t base my career on women. I think that this special is more for men.”

Rife also mentioned that he “wanted to make this special for everyone” and “not for a certain demographic.”
