I realized the importance of group calls when I was quarantined at home due to the coronavirus outbreak. I can’t get together with my family, my friends, there are no parties; my business is on hold and all that. I felt stuck on how to use my time, how to connect with my friends, or how to speed up my business. I know that I can make phone calls or that social networks are still alive. But still, I was looking for something that would be more fun and more useful at the same time.
I know I’m not the only one facing this, so I’m sharing it with my readers.
I’ve always heard of conference calling and video conferencing programs available, but never used one. But the situation I’m in made me install Skype. Yes, Skype is the only tool I use for all my group calls to my family, friends or associates.
In 2019, Skype doubled the number of audio/video group call limits from 25 to 50 participants.
Isn’t that huge!

How to set up a Skype conference call?
To get started with Conference Calling in Skype, make sure you’ve installed the app on your desktop or mobile device, whichever you’re using. Skype video calls are easy to make and completely free. HD video calls are no joke for Skype and the experience is just like talking to someone face to face. But for that, you have to meet some technical requirements.
- A fast smartphone or computer
- A high definition camera
- High speed internet with sufficient bandwidth
In its absence, Skype will be of no use to you.
Note: If any of the group call participants have slow internet; may disturb the entire conference.
How to make a conference call on Skype?
To start a business Skype conference call or just a regular one on your desktop or mobile device, the following steps will help you:
- Open the ‘Calls’ tab and press the ‘New Call’ icon.
- Search and select the people you want to call.
- Once selected, press the ‘Call’ button at the top right to make a call.
- You can even start a conference call on Skype using the free link provided by Skype. Share that link or copy it to your clipboard.
- When contacts join your conference call, the color of their icons will change to green. You can even reconnect someone who was disconnected by mistake during the call.
People who don’t use Skype, but any other phone service can also join. They need to dial the host’s Skype number or the host can also invite them via SkypeOut and the charges will be borne by the host as adding a non-Skype user is not free.
If you have to make regular calls with the same group, you can create a group in Skype and add all those contacts. The next time you need to make a conference call, call the group right away. Isn’t that easy?
Also, if you want to remove a participant, right-click on that person and click ‘Remove’.
How to merge calls on Skype?
It is another way of making a conference call where you can merge two different calls if you have a common topic of discussion. To do this, go to the ‘Recent’ tab and drag one of the calls over the other to merge them.

Group calling on Skype offers the following additional features:
- Save your group calls to view later or to take notes as Skype saves them for 30 days.
- Easily share your presentations, project work, or other similar items.
- Blur your background if you don’t want the background clutter to be exposed to your friends or coworkers.
How to schedule a Skype conference call?
If you don’t want to miss any important conference calls, Skype offers call scheduling. With Call Scheduling in Skype, you can set a reminder for an individual or group call.
To schedule a call on Skype, here’s what to do:
- First of all, sign in to your Skype account.
- Open one of your chats for which you want to create a schedule.
- To get started, select the Schedule Call button next to the Compose bar, or check out the Plugins menu.
- (+) Skype for mobile and tablet
- (…) Skype for desktop
- In the Schedule Call window, give your call a title, date, and time, and set a reminder.
Select Send, the call reminder will be sent to your chat. The contact in the chat will accept or reject the scheduled call.
