Conor McGregor hints at run for Irish president — a move cheered by Elon Musk: ‘Not even fair’

UFC star Conor McGregor may trade his boxing gloves for a suit.

The featherweight champion again hinted this week that he plans to run for president in Ireland – a massive career change that Elon Musk hailed as “unfair” to other contenders.

McGregor, 35, who has been outspoken in recent weeks amid violent riots in Dublin, said Monday he would serve the will of the people if he threw his hat in the 2025 election: “I’m not in power as president, the people. from Ireland. It will be me and you.”

The controversial MMA fighter criticized three other aging contenders vying to replace incumbent President Michael D. Higgins, who is best known for his trusty Bernese mountain dog, Misneach.

“Potential competition if I run. Gerry [Adams]78. Bertie [Ahern]. 75. Enda [Kenny], 74. Each has an unbreakable relationship with their respective party politics. It doesn’t matter what the public outside their party feels. These parties govern themselves vs. govern the people,” McGregor write on X.

“Or me, 35. Young, active, passionate, fresh skin in the game. I heard. My support. I adapt. I have no affiliation/bias/preference towards any party. They will really be held accountable for influencing current public sentiment. I even put everything to vote,” he continued.

“There will be a vote every week to make sure. I can finance.”

Tesla founder and Twitter owner Musk was quick to show support for McGregor, saying the veteran politician wouldn’t stand a chance against the newcomer.

“I thought you could take it all by yourself. It’s not even fair,” Musk repliedwith laughing crying emoji.

In a lengthy response to the CEO of Space X, McGregor stressed that the road to the nomination will be a tedious process, but he strongly feels that he will find success on the other side: “I like my chances Elon, 100 %”

His main goal, McGregor claims, is for “transparency” in government.

“At the moment there is none. Not even an inch. The false promises came around election time and then it was sheer ignorance straight to the face after that. It’s disgusting … This is why I would run away, if I wanted to. Be the voice of the people that deserves to be heard.”

McGregor initially showed interest in Ireland’s highest office last week after a man beat three children – including a seriously injured 5-year-old – and an adult during riots in Dublin.

He condemned the violence, warning that he would take steps to correct it if the current government could not.

“If they don’t act immediately with their plan of action to ensure Ireland’s security, I will,” he said.

He again referenced his potential to become Head of State in between promotional tweets for his fledgling beer brand in a Tuesday post in which he wore a white suit adorned with a green tie and green pocket square.

“Ireland, your President,” McGregor captioned the post.

Despite his hints, the former fighter did not make any concrete steps to start the campaign.
