Convicted sex offender back behind bars after mom helped him escape prison

A convicted sex offender was returned to prison on Monday after he managed to escape from a Texas prison after his mother impersonated him.

Robert Yancy Jr., 39, was arrested about 45 miles southwest of the Brazoria County jail on Monday after escaping from the Matagorda County lockup the day before, according to County Officials.

Two people were arrested for helping Yancy put together the plan and his daring escape.

Yancy’s mother, Leonor Priestle, has been charged with allowing/facilitating her son’s escape, while her boyfriend, Russell Williams, has been charged with criminal intent to escape, authorities said. Yancy has also been slapped with a felony escape charge.

The disaster began on Sunday when Priestle visited his son in prison on Sunday wearing a black sweater and beanie. Somehow the mother handed the items to Yancy and he quickly changed clothes without realizing it, the Clemens Department of the Texas Criminal Justice Unit (TDCJ) told ABC13

Priestle is also accused of giving his sex offender ID badge that allowed him to get out of jail. Although the ID badge did not have his name on it, Yancy was able to walk out of the jail with his mother at approximately 3:38 pm without the corrections officers noticing.

Authorities revealed that Priestle is a former TDCJ correctional officer, and worked at the McConnell Unit in Beeville from March 2010 to September 2011.

Officials speculated that Yancy’s mother had inside information from a previous job to help him leave the guarded facility undetected.

After they got out of jail, Yancy and his mother jumped into a white 2021 Nissan Versa and drove off, according to the Brazoria County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office. After police discovered they had an inmate on the loose, the mother’s Nissan license plate was entered into the statewide plate reader system.

Priestle was pulled over by police at a traffic light shortly before 8:30 p.m. Sunday, about 110 miles west of the prison, but her runaway son was nowhere to be found. He was arrested for an outstanding felony warrant related to Yancy’s escape from prison.

It was still unclear Sunday what role Williams’ boyfriend played in her son’s escape.

Fortunately, a park visitor who reported the escape recognized Yancy at the FM 521 River Park and contacted authorities on Monday.

Yancy reportedly tried to use a prison ID card that his mother allegedly gave him as his when confronted by police but eventually confessed.

The escapee was still wearing his white prison clothes in a photo released by the prison.

Yancy is currently serving a life sentence without parole in the prison’s Clemens Unit after he was convicted of persistent sexual abuse of a child for repeatedly abusing a 7-year-old girl over a three-year period, authorities said.

Jurors took just 23 minutes to deliberate on his sentence during a two-day trial in May 2022, according to the Victoria Advocate.

“We would like to thank everyone involved for cooperating and apprehending this dangerous individual as quickly as possible,” TDCJ said following his arrest.

The Brazoria County Detention Center is located about 40 miles southwest of Houston.

Yancy is the second inmate to escape from the Clemens Unit this year, according to ABC13. On October 6, Cadarion Avery – who is an inmate in a housing location outside the main jail for inmates serving non-violent sentences – walked away from the unit but was found nearby a short time later.

TDCJ said the unit is reviewing security processes and investigating areas for improvement.
