Country Legend Willie Nelson Reacts To His Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Following 90th Birthday!

Willie Nelson’s 1971 LP may be called “Yesterday’s Wine,” but the legendary 90-year-old country artist’s legacy lives on!

Yesterday, the 2023 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees were announced, and the “Whiskey River” singer is among the institution’s 36th class. Nelson’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame came a week after his 90th birthday; Nelson achieved that feat on April 29.

Some of the biggest names in rock and roll came together to commemorate Nelson’s big day with a star-studded concert. Keith Richards, Neil Young, Billy Strings, Margo Price, The Chicks, Lyle Lovett, and Chris Stapleton are among the musicians gathered to honor the new Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees!

Nelson sat down with ‘HOF’s Greg Harris to discuss the musical milestone, reflect on rock and roll’s legacy and how he feels about joining a group of musicians who have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for nearly four decades.

In Celebration of Nelson’s 90th Birthday!

Los Angeles made room for Nelson and several artists and celebrities on his birthday at the Hollywood Bowl. The show started on time, according to Rolling Stone, with Billy Strings opening the festivities!

In addition to the artists mentioned above, a diverse group of artists completed the four-hour party.

Nelson’s sons, Lukas and Micah, are on the bill in addition to several artists who have performed with Nelson or have been associated with his career over the years. Roseanne Cash, Stephen Stills, Kris Kristofferson and Bob Weir also gathered to pay tribute to the “Always On My Mind” singer.

George Strait, Sturgill Simpson, Leon Bridges, The Lumineers, Norah Jones, Gary Clark Jr., Edie Brickell, Jack Johnson, Tom Jones, Miranda Lambert, Snoop Dogg, Dave Matthews, Ziggy Marley, Beck, Allison Russell, Buddy Cannon, Chris Stapleton, and Dwight Yoakam round out the lineup.

Cash spoke to the outlet about Nelson’s legacy and his close friendship with his father, Johnny. ‘The Man In Black’ died in 2003.

“They love each other like brothers – Willie, Waylon [Jennings] Kris, and my dad,” Cash said. “And Willie and Kris were the last ones standing… I’m still moved by that,” he added.

Lovett told Rolling Stone how Nelson’s music made him feel.

“Willie’s music is like the bible,” says the “If I Were The Man You Wanted” singer. “To listen to a Willie Nelson song gives you a kind of education, to learn a Willie Nelson song expands it exponentially… the economy of words, the imagery, the simplicity of the language, the complexity of the thought – it’s all in his songs,” he continued.

Jones had his own tribute for the audience before his performance.

“I’m so happy to be here,” the “Come Away With Me” singer began her tribute, “I love Willie so much, so, so much, and everyone in his world so much. And that includes Bobbie Nelson,” Jones continued; Nelson’s sister and longtime keyboard player died last year. “one of my favorite pianists. Here we go, this one’s for Bobbie,” he continued before launching into “Down Yonder.”

On March 10 last year, Nelson shared a black-and-white portrait of himself with his beloved sister. Bobbie’s passing will mark the first time in five decades that her brother will perform live without her. (via The Blast)

The tribute was shared on behalf of the Nelson family.

It reads in part, “Her elegance, grace, beauty, and talent make the world a better place. He was the first member of Willie’s band, as his pianist and singer. Our hearts are broken and he will be greatly missed. But we are so lucky to have him in our lives…”

Speaking to Harris via Zoom in an interview lasting more than three and a half minutes, Nelson said of his induction, “It’s a huge honor. I like it. I want to thank everyone who voted for it, it was great.”

His reaction to the news Nelson joked “I think they have the wrong number. No, it was great fun. I appreciate it.”

He also discusses the overall impact and influence of other genres that influenced rock and roll. “Whenever it’s supposed to come up, I listen to it because I’ve listened to all kinds of music all my life. So, rock and roll, blues, country, bluegrass, gospel, I like it all.”

Nelson also mentioned how difficult it is to pinpoint the artists who have influenced him over the decades, but he has no problem naming his own. He shared, “Hank Williams, Bob Wills, all the way back to the man…”
