Couple who purchased mold-infested home from alleged husband killer Kouri Richins speak out

A Utah couple who bought a converted mansion from Kouri Richins, who wrote a book about grief after allegedly murdering her husband, blames the mother for their near-financial ruin.

Taryn and Alec Wright say they have been plagued by “dangerous” levels of mold, an onslaught of mysterious medical problems and endless financial stress in the three years since the Richins sold them the house.

“There has been no effort to right any of the wrongs that he has thrown at us,” Taryn, 38, told “Dateline” in her first interview about her lawsuit against Richins.

“We are just innocent bystanders in his path of destruction.”

The Herber City home was the first Richins sold as part of his flipping business.

Richins is accused of injecting her husband Eric Richins with a fatal fentanyl-laced Moscow mule in March 2022 after a day-long argument over a $2 million mansion she hoped to turn over that he refused to pay for.

He sealed the deal the next day and threw a party at the mansion with 10 of his friends.

Wright had sued Richins and his real estate company six months before the gruesome murder, alleging he sold the house without disclosing a series of defects.

The previous owner, Val Maynard, also confirmed to “Dateline” that he told Richins that the house needed significant repairs because there was “a lot of water damage.”

After an inspection found no problems, the Wrights bought the house for $409,000 — nearly double what Richins bought it for.

But just a few months later after the first spring rain, they found mold on the walls of their son’s room and pools of water on the floor.

Since then, they claim they’ve had to evacuate the house multiple times and have spent thousands trying to replace mold-damaged walls and windows, only to find the house also suffered from severe structural problems.

A home inspection in August 2022 found “dangerous” levels of mold in the basement, with spores spread throughout the home.

They have also suffered from a series of illnesses and health problems – persistent asthma and fungal infections, joint pain and brain fog – that require them to seek medical attention.

“We always go to the doctor,” Taryn said. “It’s never like, ‘Oh, this is what’s wrong with you. It’s like, ‘Oh well, you’ll get over it.'”

“It’s really great, really hard,” he added.

They were eventually forced out of the house, and struggled to keep up with the mortgage payments.

They are also barely able to afford the rent of the house they have moved to, they said.

In a court filing earlier this year, lawyers for Richins denied Wright’s claims and claimed the company made “full disclosure”.

The lawsuit was a last resort for the Wrights, who said they repeatedly tried to contact the Richins about the best way to fix their home.

“We haven’t heard anything from him,” Alec Wright said.
