Creator Sam Levinson Denies ‘The Idol’ Is About Britney Spears

“The Idol” creator Sam Levinson wants to set the record straight that his new HBO show isn’t trying to be a “retelling” of Britney Spears and her career.

Although the new series tells the story of a pop star trying to make a comeback and gives a few nods to the 41-year-old “Hold Me Closer” singer, Levinson claims he’s not trying to tell his story in the new series, which stars Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd.

At a Cannes press conference (via Deadline ), the “Euphoria” creator said that, while there are some nods to pop stars and their careers in the series, that he’s “not trying to tell a story about any particular pop star.”

“It’s a lot of pressure — to always be on top, and to be what everyone wants you to be,” he said of the character, adding, “It’s a lonely life.”

“We can all pretend that everyone is looking out for someone’s best interests, but I think fame is really damaging, it’s very easy to surround yourself with myth makers who keep supporting us,” he added.

“The Idol” stars Lily-Rose Depp as a pop star named Jocelyn who makes a huge career breakthrough and becomes an international success. However, the fame soon became too overwhelming for him to handle, and he eventually suffered a nervous breakdown that completely derailed his tour.

Determined to make a career comeback, he meets Abel Tesfaye (better known as The Weeknd) and his character Tedros. The manager and producer of the nightclub has a sordid past unbeknownst to Jocelyn.

In the midst of intense relationships, his album suddenly got a remix when gasping for air to make the recording. Fans immediately drew parallels to the scene and Britney’s hit single, “Gimme More.”

That aside, the team and Jocelyn’s manager, played by Hank Azaria, are very suspicious of Tedros and what they believe to be his evil intentions.

Sam Levinson went on to say that the Britney reference in the series is an example of how a pop star can put a spin on what at first appears to be a bad situation.

Lily-Rose Depp also said that they “don’t tell other people’s stories” and revealed that her character was actually influenced by Sharon Stone after “Basic Instinct” and Jeanne Moreau.

“I think something we wanted to do was make him feel at the same time like a pop star of our time, but one who’s in his own plane,” Depp added.

The Weeknd also shared his thoughts on the concept for the series, saying, “We originally wanted to do a dark, twisted fairy tale with the music industry and everything I know about it and elevate it, and take inspiration from movies that Sam and I love — that’s true -our true love for music.”

“When I found out how involved Sam was in the music on Euphoria and started working with him on the music on the show, that’s when it opened up for us,” he continued. “Can we create our own pop stars? Can we create someone who’s trying to find themselves, use my experience, use her experience, use Lily’s experience to create something special and brave and exciting and fun that will make people laugh, p— some people be stunned.”

From Britney Spears, Sam Levinson revealed that The Weeknd’s own career was a major inspiration for the series.

“If he can do this, if he can go from being a shy kid behind the microphone to a superstar on stage — He’s got something in him that’s one in 100 billion,” Levinson said. “There’s something about that drive, the ambition to win people over, to make them stop thinking about all the s— life, trials, tribulations, work; and give themselves to music.”

“It was really when it clicked for me what this show was about,” he added. “It’s about ambition and the drive to be a better artist.”
