In 2002, pop star Britney Spears almost turned to acting with the movie “Crossroads.”
The film stars Princess Pop, Zoe Saldaña, and Taryn Manning as three friends who take a cross-country road trip to mend their friendship after years apart. Along the way, Britney’s character, Lucy, reconnects with Ben (Anson Mount) for a passionate night together.

On Friday, “Crossroads” director Tamra Davis told Entertainment Weekly that she and writer Shonda Rhimes had to fight to keep the controversial sex scene in the film. “We definitely had to fight for some things,” Davis said, noting that Britney wanted to keep the sex scenes in the film. “He wants [challenge] image that she’s a virgin forever,” Davis said of Britney’s decision.
Davis said that the sex scenes were done “tastefully”, noting that “a child wouldn’t know what’s going on.” However, in the end the scene was kept on film. “That’s a fight I’m glad we won,” added Davis.

Britney Spears dated Justin Timberlake from 1999 to 2002, including while he was filming “Crossroads.” In 2003, a year after their breakup, Britney told W Magazine that she had slept with only “one person in my entire life,” hinting that the singer was the “Cry Me A River” singer.
However, in her memoir, “The Woman In Me,” Britney says that she actually lost her virginity to her brother’s childhood best friend, Bryan Spears. That doesn’t mean Britney and Justin aren’t close, though, as Davis recalls seeing Justin stay in Britney’s hotel room while they were filming “Crossroads.”
“I would have to knock on her hotel room door in the morning sometimes and say, ‘OK, Britney, time to go,’ and Justin would be there,” Davis told the outlet. “It was at the height of, ‘Is Britney a virgin?’ I won’t even ask! Even waking it up in a hotel room, I was like, whatever happens in your personal life, it’s personal.

Davis said that he thought Britney and Justin were the “cutest couple” at the time and even tried to work an NSYNC reference into the film. Lucy and her friends sing the band’s “Bye Bye Bye” while Ben sleeps in the back seat of the car.
“The scene embodied what was going on with the music scene at the time,” explains Davis. “It’s a mix of what music [Ben] want to hear, which is Nirvana and alt-grunge, versus what the girl wants to hear, which is ‘NSync and the Backstreet Boys and boy bands. We love the contrast of the radio. I don’t know if it’s specifically in the script. I think until the last minute, we didn’t know if we were going to have the rights because it’s such a big song.”

Although many fans know that Britney and Justin first met on the set of “The Mickey Mouse Club,” Britney also appeared on the show with actor Ryan Gosling. He almost starred alongside her again on the set of “The Notebook.” In her memoir, the Princess of Pop revealed that the casting call came to her and Rachel McAdams.
In an excerpt from her memoir released by People magazine, Britney admitted, “Casting The Notebook came to me and Rachel McAdams, and while it would have been fun to reconnect with Ryan Gosling after we were on The Mickey Mouse Club, I’m glad I didn’t . If I had, instead of working on my In the Zone album, I’d be acting like a 1940s heiress day and night.”

The “Oops!… I Did It Again” singer explained that she learned on the set of “Crossroads” that acting wasn’t for her. “The experience was not easy for me. My problem was not with anyone involved in the production but with what acting did to my mind,” Britney wrote in her memoir. “I think I started acting Method — I just didn’t know how to get out of my character. I really became this other person. Some people do Method acting, but they are usually aware of the fact that they are doing it. But I don’t have any separation at all.”
“I ended up walking differently, carrying myself differently, talking differently. I was a different person for months while I was filming Crossroads. Still to this day, I’m convinced the girls I shot the movie with were thinking, She’s a little…strange. If they think so, they are right,” he continued.

“That was the beginning and the end of my acting career, and I was relieved,” he wrote. “I imagine there are people in acting who have dealt with that sort of thing, where they have trouble separating themselves from the character.”
“I hope I never approach the dangers of that job again. Living that way, being half self and half fictional character, is a mess. After a while you don’t know what’s real anymore,” he added, though fans will be able to see him on stage again in a global fan event that will bring “Crossroads” back to theaters on October 23 and October 25.
