Passengers aboard MSC Cruises’ Meraviglia were shocked on Sunday and some even “thought it was a joke” when they were told that instead of enjoying warm weather and beaches, the ship will now sail to Boston, Maine and Canada.

From Florida and the Bahamas, the ship will remain docked in Boston until Tuesday before heading to Portland, Maine and Saint John, Newfoundland before returning to New York.
MSC Cruises informed passengers of the changes in an email sent the night before the seven-day cruise began.

For some, the change of plans was bittersweet.
One passenger, Connie C., of Pennsylvania, told the Globe she travels to Boston regularly for work — on her company’s dime.
Customers are allowed to rebook a cruise the night before it departs or they can get a refund to apply towards a future cruise.
“I don’t want to pay $5,000 [for my family] to come to Boston,” he said. “This should be our Christmas vacation.”
MSC Cruises allows customers to rebook the night before the cruise departs. They also tell customers that they can cancel their cruise “for free and receive a refund in the form of a Future Cruise Credit.”
A similar cruise scheduled to depart on December 23 with the same itinerary costs at least $739 per person.
