‘Dahmer’ Co-Creator Defends The Show’s Direction

Since the release of Netflix’s “Dahmer,” created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, it has received mixed reviews.

The limited production focuses on the life of serial killer, Jeffrey Dahmer, and explores the narrative behind the murders he committed between 1978 and 1991 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Ohio. While its horror knows no boundaries, critics believe the Netflix show portrays the opposite, which co-creator Brennan recently denied, shedding more light on the overall storyline.

Viewers may believe the show “Dahmer” is “sympathetic” to Jeffrey Dahmer. However, Brennan thought otherwise as she told Page Six during the premiere of “The Watcher” on Wednesday, October 12. In his words:

“I think we show a human being. He’s very human, and he’s very terrible, and that’s what we want to unpack. We try to show as objective a portrait as possible. We do our homework.”

The infamous serial killer killed seventeen men and boys between 1978 and 1991, with most of the killings involving cannibalism, necrophilia, and organ harvesting. His life was cut short at the age of 34 in 1994 when he was beaten to death while serving sixteen life sentences.

The biographical series has become the second most popular Netflix show ever, which premiered on September 2. And such fame amazes Brennan, who admittedly has no idea why it happened. He said:

“I’ve asked myself the same question. It’s interesting when a horror story like that resonates with people. I think it’s a way for people to get close to scary things about themselves, watching it (portrayed) on screen.”

However, the 44-year-old creator does not understand why “Dahmer” fans miss the killer, whom he believes is “creepy” and “crazy.” Speaking of creepy, his latest show, “The Watcher,” a true-crime miniseries, fits his profile.

It tells the true story of a married couple who were harassed by a letter signed by ‘The Watcher’ when moving into their dream home. Explaining the show’s narrative, Brennan said there’s something about the house that brings out the most sensitive parts of people, which she believes is “pretty deep.”

As for his work on “Dahmer,” another backlash the series received came from him being tagged as an LGBTQ creation after its release. The Blast reports that the LGBTQ community is not taken with such negative representations, especially since Netflix usually uses tags for more positive content such as “Sex Education” and “Heartstopper.”

On Twitter, critics voiced their opinions on the situation. one write“Anyone think that Netflix listing Dahmer under LGBTQ is a bit cruel, especially when the True Crime tag would work?”

Other users plead Netflix to “please reconsider having Dahmer with the LGBTQ tag, especially as one of the tags once you open the app.” In response to the criticism, the central streaming platform removed the LGBTQ tag but did not make a public statement about the removal.

Other tags attached to this series are unpleasant, horror, dark, psychological and vintage crime tags. And since Dahmer was gay, just like many of his victims, that proves a possible reason for Netflix using the LGBTQ tag.

Mother of Three Confesses to Masturbating in ‘Dahmer’ Violent Scene

As an important series on one of the biggest streaming platforms, “Dahmer” has certainly caught the interest of many viewers, including a young woman who made an unsettling revelation about the show.

The Blast reports that during an October episode of “The Kyle and Jackie O Show” where the hosts discussed women attracted to killers, the female listener called in to make her confession.

Despite being a happy mother of three, she admits she was turned on by the scene showing Dahmer listening to a man’s heartbeat and expressing his desire to eat him. The woman said something came over her, prompting her to “take care of herself if you know what I mean, and now it’s normal.”

He implied that he was masturbating on the serial killer before explaining that the scene was “so far from his normal life” that it took him to “this other place.”
