Actress Daisy Ridley puts those Force skills to good use!
The 30-year-old actress was an unknown before she starred as Rey in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. After starring in 2015’s “The Force Awakens,” Ridley became a household name and reprized the role in 2017’s “The Last Jedi” and 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker.”
While sitting down to talk about his new film, “Sometimes I Think About Dying,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last month, Ridley also talked about the grueling training he had to go through for “Young Woman and the Sea.”

Disney’s “Young Woman and the Sea” is a biographical drama that focuses on the story of Gertrude Ederle, the American swimming champion, who won the gold medal in the 1924 Olympics. Two years later, in 1926, Ederle became the first woman to swim 21 miles across the English Channel .
Although Ridley never actually swam the English Channel to prepare for her role as Ederle in the film, she told The Hollywood Reporter that she swam around 26 miles in total while she was preparing for the film.

“I mean, I haven’t swam in the English Channel and I never will. Some people are inspired by the character they’re playing to do that, but during that training and filming, I probably swam 26 miles,” Ridley said.
“There’s something insane about athletes that I still can’t wrap my head around, and insane might be the wrong word. The woman who coaches me, Siobhan-Marie O’Connor, won silver at the Rio Olympics in 2016, and she does a lot of training,” explained Ridley. “Of course, everyone applies it in their work, but to put someone’s body through that is beyond my belief.”

Ridley praised O’Connor for being “a great teacher” and making her “a much better swimmer than I ever thought.”
“Last January, when I started training, I could barely do 20 meters in the pool. And then on the last take, I was swimming in the Black Sea, and I was fighting the current in the sea alone,” he explained. “I swam for maybe two minutes keeping track of one ship beside me, keeping track of the boats following, and making sure I was in line. So I was proud of myself in the end, but swimming is a different sport. I haven’t actually swum since.”

Fortunately, Ridley got a sneak peek at the final cut of the film and he likes what he’s seen so far.
“I recently saw the final cut of the film, and it was really good. I’m very, very excited for the end of the year, whenever we can share it,” he added. While no release date has been announced for the film, it will be available to stream on Disney+.

Although he has starred in several projects since his time in the Lucasfilm franchise, it has been the role that Ridley is best known for. Therefore, in the same interview, Ridley was asked if she plans to return to acting as Rey in the near future.
“Honestly, I don’t know. I think Rey’s story ends in an interesting way with the last movie,” he explained, referring to “The Rise of Skywalker.”

“It’s been three crazy years since the film was released. I feel like a different person,” he added. “We’ve all been through a lot of changes in the last three years, with a lot of crazy things happening.”
“So I really don’t know if there is a plan. I don’t know,” he admitted. “But in the end, I like my experience, I like what I got to do and I like the people I get to work with. So, for that to happen again, even once, would be amazing. Because the dream is to actually be around good people who make you feel good and feel heard while you’re doing good work.
