On Monday, the Dalai Lama posted a statement of apology on Twitter, saying his actions were “innocent.” The Nobel peace laureate wrote, “A video clip has gone viral showing a recent encounter when a boy asked His Holiness the Dalai Lama if he could hug him.”

He continued, “Your Majesty would like to apologize to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends around the world, because his words may have hurt. He often teases people he meets innocently and playfully, even in public and in front of the camera. He regretted the incident.”

During his conversation with reporters, Tsering also hinted that the video was shared online and the subsequent response was planned. He claimed that “pro-Chinese sources” had fueled the entire controversy and said, “The political angle of this incident cannot be ignored.”
