Len Goodman may be dead, but “Dancing With The Stars” is making sure his stellar legacy lives on.
Goodman joined the dance show in 2005 and did so well that he retired in November 2022 to spend more time with his family in Britain. The star finally breathed his last in April this year at the age of 78 after a lifetime of outstanding achievements.
‘DWTS’ Renames Mirror Ball Trophy In Honor Of Len Goodman
“Dancing With the Stars” executive producer Conrad Green revealed to USA TODAY yesterday that contestants on the popular dance show will now compete for the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy. Producers revealed plans to unveil the new, redesigned trophy on Tuesday’s premiere show, where they will pause to pay their last respects. He said:
“The Len Goodman Mirrorball trophy will now be raised on ‘Dancing With the Stars’ like the Vince Lombardi trophy was raised at the Super Bowl.”
According to the producers, the show intends to make Goodman an important and permanent part and “to constantly remind people of the importance” of the late head judge on “DWTS.”
Green went on to say that Tuesday’s memorial service will be an emotional and moving moment. He added, “Len loves the show and will always be there, looking down on us.”

Green credits the late Goodman’s keen eye for detail and incredible dance knowledge, which added to the credibility and reputation of the famous dance competition. He says he has a lot of respect for the show, and “the dancers always want to know what Len thinks about their performance.”
Well, Tuesday’s tribute won’t be the last, as Green shared that another tribute will be organized for Goodman later this season with a journey through his career progression. The show will include video tributes from friends, colleagues, and family as well as performances from dancers.
He also explained that the decision to honor his life with the Mirror Ball Trophy and a new cast was “appropriate for a bit of a reboot season.”
Ballroom Champion Dies After Prolonged Battle With Cancer
Before her painful death in April this year, the former “Strictly Come Dancing” judge had been battling bone cancer. The former judge was admitted to hospital in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, with a terminal illness six months after retiring.
Goodman died at the age of 78, just hours short of turning 79, surrounded by his family at a hospice in Kent, England. His representative shared:
“I can confirm he passed away peacefully at the weekend surrounded by his family. A much loved husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.”

The longtime judge is survived by his wife, son and two grandchildren, and he even predicted his death weeks after he retired from DWTS. According to The Blast, Goodman alluded to a similar pattern between himself and his late father in December 2022, who also coincidentally died at the age of 79.
The ballroom champion reportedly said: “My dad had the right idea. He loved gardening, and he had a stroke while he was in the garden. He’s 79, so if I follow my father’s path, that will be next year,”
Since his death, tributes and messages of goodwill have poured in from his colleagues, friends and fans around the world, and he serves as a judge on shows. Craig Revel Horwood wrote:
“I have just woken up to the sad news that my lovely colleague and dear friend Len Goodman has passed away. My heart and love go out to Sue and her beautiful family. Len Goody Goodman is what I always called him, and “Ten of Len & seveeeeern” will stay with me forever. RIP Len.”
A former ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ judge, Alesha Dixon, offered her condolences to Goodman’s family as she described him as “a real man and an amazing person.”
The star continued that Goodman always made her feel welcome and that her time on the show was a wonderful experience. Goodman was previously diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2009 and bounced back after surgery at a London hospital.
