Dave Chappelle Seen With Will Smith After Snide Comment Over Chris Rock Slap

Will Smith hosted a star-studded gathering of friends, including Dave Chappelle, to watch his upcoming film “Emancipation.”

When Smith and comedian Chris Rock clashed following the infamous Oscar slap, Chappelle was one of the celebrities who slammed The Fresh Prince for the incident — and recently, too. Hence, fans think that the two are unlikely to be friendly with each other again. However, the latest update from the father of two has proved otherwise.

On Monday, Smith shared a pair of Instagram photos from a private screening of the December 2022 film, “Emancipation.” While the event was a welcome development in the actor’s comeback journey, what was surprising was Chappelle’s presence there.

In the first slide, the “Chappelle’s Show” star is seen looking into the camera as Smith snaps a selfie with him and other celebrities like Tyler Perry, A$AP Rocky, Rihanna, Fawn and Kenya Barris.

The 49-year-old reappears in the next picture and is seen standing up during a conversation with a seated guest. She rocked a loose brown round neck shirt and black trousers, which she paired with a simple necklace dangling from it.

Behind him is a spotlight that illuminates the projector screen with the name of the film. Smith captioned the post, “EPIC night!! Thanks for coming to see #Emancipation. Hope you will enjoy!!” Among the 5k+ comments was one from Barris that read, “Tonight was MAGIC, and your movie is truly something that will last forever!”

Set in Louisiana during the American Civil War, “Emancipation” will feature Smith in his role as Peter, a man who escapes from slavery and embarks on a quest for freedom. The Antoine Fuqua-directed film will be the actor’s first Hollywood project following the Oscar incident when he slapped Rock on stage in front of a live audience.

Chappelle reportedly spoke about Smith at a show in England, saying he “did a perfect impression of a 30-year-old man” last month. The Blast shared that the stand-up comic allegedly claimed that the “Focus” actor “took off his mask and showed us he’s ugly like the rest of us.”

He added, “Whatever the consequences … I hope he doesn’t put his mask back on and let his real face breathe.” Chappelle also mentioned how he would react if he were in Rock’s place.

The 49-year-old comedian said Smith wouldn’t “enjoy the rest of his night” if he slapped her like that. The comments were made during Rock and Chappelle’s appearance at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday, September 3 as part of their European tour.

“King Richard” Star Overcomes Relationship With Rock After Feud

In July, The Blast reported that Smith opened up about life after he attacked Chris on stage that March night. The Grammy Award winner shared a video that begins with these words appearing on the screen:

“It’s been a minute… Over the past few months, I’ve been doing a lot of personal thinking and work…You’ve asked a lot of fair questions that I want to take some time to answer.”

Responding to the first question asking why the actress didn’t apologize to Chris in her acceptance speech, Smith said she “slipped at that point,” adding that she has a “fuzzy” memory.

The 54-year-old said that although he had contacted Rock, he was not ready to talk at the time. Smith concluded that the 57-year-old would call him when he was ready to talk.

The conclusion stopped the “Where the Day Takes You” actress from continuing to tell Chris, “I’m sorry to you. My behavior was unacceptable, and I’m here when you’re ready to talk.”

The “Men in Black” star also apologized to his colleague’s mother, Rosalie, revealing that she saw the interview he did. Smith claims that he didn’t realize and didn’t think about how many people his actions had hurt “at the time.”

The star of “The Pursuit of Happyness” also apologized to Chris’s family, especially his brother, Tony. After stating that she and the 48-year-old “have a great relationship,” Smith mentioned that “this may not be fixed.”

The “Wild Wild West” hitmaker concluded that he “wouldn’t try to unravel all that now,” but he could admit that there was no part of him that thought “that was the right way to act at the time.”
