Decorated Russian general blown up on land mine in Ukraine possibly planted by another unit

A decorated Russian army commander was killed in Ukraine after being detonated on a landmine possibly planted by another unit fighting Kyiv’s army.

Major General Vladimir Zavadsky, 45, deputy commander of the 14th Army Corps, died Tuesday, according to a social media post from the Moscow Higher Weapons Command School. Zavadsky graduated from the military school, known as MROO “Kremlin,” in 2000.

Zavadsky was not killed in action, but rather died in a mine explosion in the rear during the “ridiculous” redeployment of his unit, reported the VChK-OGPU Telegram channel, which claims to have close ties to the Russian security services.

“The investigation is considering the possibility of an explosion in the mine, which was previously placed by a neighboring unit for the purpose of fighting the enemy. [sabotage and reconnaissance unit],” the channel reported, citing an unnamed source.

Meanwhile, efforts are allegedly being made to blame Zavadsky’s death on Ukrainian artillery strikes.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has not yet confirmed the death of the general.

During his more than two decades of military service, Zavadsky led motorized rifle battalions, platoons and companies, and received awards for bravery. He is survived by his wife, Oksana, and their two sons.

Zavadsky is at least the 12th Russian general killed since the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, reported the Russian Telegram channel “Important Stories.”

However, according to information from the Japanese intelligence service, the number of deaths among high-ranking Russian officials could reach 20 people.

In July, Lt. General Oleg Tsokov was killed when a Storm Shadow missile attack destroyed a hotel in the occupied city of Berdiansk, where the Russian military commander was staying.
