Early Life
Deenanath Mangeshkar’s family had its roots in Portuguese India (now Goa), and he was born into a Mangeshi family. Deenanath’s father was a Karhade Brahmin who was the priest of the famous Mangeshi Temple of Goa. However, his mother was born into the Devadasi community in Goa. She is called upon to sing and dance at religious, cultural, and festival ceremonies and rituals organized at the Mangeshi temple and has musical talent. She was Deenanath’s father’s mistress. The famous Gomantak Maratha Samaj in Goa was later formed from the Devadasi community. The name of the village is Mangeshi which is located in Goa. Deenanath’s father adopted the surname ‘Hardikar’ as his ancestors belonged to a family of priests who used to perform the ritual bathing of Lord Shiva’s Lingaa at the Mangeshi Temple. This ceremony is called ‘Abhishekam.’ This is mentioned in the book titled ‘In search of Lata Mangeshkar,’ released by Harish Bhimani in 1995. The ancestors and her family are considered as the ‘Abhishekis’ of Goa. However, Deenanath was more interested in music and singing because his mother was a great singer and dancer. Later, in his teenage years, Deenanath changed his surname from Abhisheki to Mangeshkar which means Linga of Lord Shiva. In Goa, in the Mangeshi temple, the Linga of Lord Shiva is worshiped by the Abhishekhi community.
Music Education
Deenanath Mangeshkar did not attend any school to achieve formal education but started learning music and singing when he was five years old. His first teacher was Shri Baba Mashelkar, and he studied music from him at the Gwalior school. Soon after completing his musical education from Maleshkar, he became a disciple of Gayanacharya Pundit Ramkrishnabua Vaze. Later, he attended the music lessons of Pundit Sukhdev Prasad, who was the father of the famous Indian classical singer Pandit Mani Prasad of the Kirana Gharana and was an accomplished Bikaner classical music coach. Deenanath Mangeshkar started working with Kirloskar Sangeet Mandali and Kirloskar Natak Mandali and started performing singing and musical performances on stage when he was eleven years old. Later, Deenanath Mangeshkar left Kirloskar Natak Mandali to form his own Balwant Mandali which he established with his friends Chintamanrao Kolhatkar and Krishnarao Kolhapure.

Deenanath Mangeshkar is a very handsome man with an amazing melodious voice. Soon, he became the producer of several Marathi language stage shows and achieved considerable publicity through his musical and drama shows. Bal Gandharva, who is a famous face of Marathi theatre, offered Deenanath Mangeshkar to join his organization and also stated that when Deenanath would join his Mandali then he would throw rupees at Deenanath’s feet to welcome him.

Soon after gaining immense popularity in the Indian music industry, Deenanath Mangeshkar began producing films shot in Hindi and Marathi in the 1930s. He started acting in his own scripted films including Krishnarjun Yuddha. The songs in the films are also picturized on it. Later, Deenanath Mangeshkar became a disciple of Ramkrishna Vaze to perfect his Indian classical music.

- Deenanath Mangeshkar married twice. He was twenty-one years old when he married Narmada in 1922. Soon after the marriage, Deenanath Mangeshkar changed his name from Narmada to Shrimati who was then nineteen.
