Demi Lovato is talking about her relationship with her boyfriend, Jordan Lutes, professionally known as Jutes, whom she has been dating since August 2022.
The award-winning multi-faceted artist recently opened up about how she felt when she first met Jutes, hinting that she liked him in the moment but preferred to have a solid “foundation of friendship” before romance.

In a recent episode of “The LadyGang” podcast, Lovato opened up about her relationship with the Jutes, recalling their first meeting during a music session.

“The way I met my boyfriend was actually in one session,” she shared. “So he’s a musician himself, but he’s also co-written on other people’s music, so he joined the session, and I was really like, ‘who is this guy?'”
The “Heart Attack” musician continued, “I texted my best friend and was like, ‘Oh my God, the hottest guy just walked in; I’m like so nervous I don’t know what to do with myself.'”
Although he’s attracted to the indie musician, he’s just “very focused” on the music, which he admits he loves. The two ended up being friends for some time before telling each other their feelings.
When asked how long it took to go from the “friend zone” to admitting feelings, Lovato said, “a few months,” prompting one of the podcast’s hosts to emphasize the importance of having a “friendship foundation” before dating.
“You need a foundation of friendship because it’s like you don’t know people’s motives,” she said, which the “Skyscraper” singer backed up, based on her personal experience.
“I’ve dealt with that in the past like people with different motives, and it’s just a disappointment,” Lovato explained, adding, “So I think when you can build that friendship with someone, the trust is there. It’s, like, you don’t always get when you first start dating someone.”
He later insisted that dating is and can be “scary. This isn’t the first time the “Camp Rock” alum touched on his friendship with the Jutes before they took things to another level.
The interviewer then commented on the love affair, saying, “I feel like you’re like a friend first and foremost, which I feel. [is] like the root of any good relationship.” The statement prompted Lovato to elaborate on how the two became friends. In his words:
“Well, we became friends first. We were friends for a few months, and then we decided to start dating, and after that, we told each other how we felt.”
The 31-year-old pop star went on to mention that expressing their feelings is “kind of a mutual thing,” which they do via text. “Like we’re texting,” he recounted. “And he said something, and I was like, I took it one way, and he was like, okay, if you take it one way, then I know you like me.”
Lovato luckily took “it” the right way, which resulted in their relationship and is a decision the couple has never regretted.
The “Convinced” musician called Jutes his “best friend” who he’s “so happy” with, after which he insisted that the two are huge fans of each other’s music, including his latest album, “Revamped.”
