Even though he only caught the headline and introductory sentence, fans got the whole picture and are definitely excited for him. “Demi Lovato Makes Directing Debut With ‘Child Star’ Documentary on Hulu,” the headline reads, and the piece features photos of the musician doing some directorial work alongside other women.
She captioned the post with a note of joy, expressing her hope. In her words, “So excited for this!! Can’t wait to share some stories that work.” According to Deadline, the production with the working title “Child Star” will “uncover the ups and downs of growing up in the spotlight through the lens of some of the world’s most famous former child stars.”
Among the documented stars is Lovato, although other cast members have yet to be revealed. However, the film will explore how “their rise to fame, fortune and power affects their future.” Each star’s experience growing up in the spotlight will be told through personal conversations led by the “Heart Attack” singer using recordings and archival material.
Lovato believes the project is appropriate to mark her directorial debut because it “hits home” and “sheds light on an important message about growing up in the public eye.” He also hinted that such an experience would show the audience how the child stars had to learn to protect their boundaries and be the advocates of their destiny.
The 30-year-old added, “I am humbled to learn from individuals who have lived the unique experience of child stardom and shared their stories in our film.”
Nicola Marsh will join him to co-direct as the film is produced by Michael D. Ratner’s OBB Pictures, a division of OBB Media. Additionally, Lovato’s production company, DLG, and Scooter Braun’s SB Projects are producing.

Ratner voiced his thoughts on the film in a statement, explaining that the team “prepared to tell a story that is timely because of our constantly connected world and lack of privacy.” He went on to state that the narrative has “a shared nostalgia that is as rooted and thought-provoking as it is entertaining.”
The founders of OBB Media are excited to work with Lovato and the “talented individuals” who participated in the documentary to share their stories authentically. He also expressed appreciation for working with “the team at SB Projects and Hulu in bringing their stories to the screen.”
Meanwhile, Belisa Balaban, Senior Vice President, Documentaries and Unscripted Series of Hulu Originals, said, “At the heart of our documentaries are storytellers with different backgrounds and perspectives who never leave a page of their story behind.
Balaban added that Lovato’s “first-hand experiences and personal relationships” are all on full display in the film, which uniquely fits the story Hulu is telling.

Although Lovato remains on cloud nine about making her directorial debut with a documentary, she once revealed her regrets about making three documentaries about her sobriety journey.
In August 2022, The Blast reported that he spoke to Alternative Press, expressing disgust at having to watch himself, which he believed viewers were also bored with. As fans know, his three documentaries chronicled his struggle with sobriety and journey to recovery, all released before the “Staying Strong” author turned 30.
“I wish I’d waited until I knew more,” he explained, “because now it’s cemented. Calmness is what works for me and nothing else.
In one of her documentaries, “Dancing With The Devil,” Lovato opened up about her “California sober” era, where she smoked weed and drank alcohol moderately, following her drug overdose.
