According to the singer, she grew up as a weirdo but hid her identity because she couldn’t tell anyone. Lovato explained, “I came from a Christian background and grew up queer but didn’t tell people until I felt comfortable with it.”

After being in the closet for a long time, the singer said she came out at the age of 25. “It took me until I was 25 to come out to my mom,” Lovato said. “At the time, I was bisexual, and then I realized I was pansexual. I took some time. It’s kind of funny because I released ‘Cool for the Summer’ before I met my parents.”

The hit song contains lyrics that the Disney star believes hint at his sexuality. A line from the song goes, “Got a test for a cherry/I just gotta eat.”

Although she has begun to reveal her identity, Lovato stated that she does not feel ready to come out. However, that all changed when he finally let the cat out of the bag! “Barney and Friends” describes how he told his parents about his sexuality, telling his stepfather before his mother.

Lovato said, “’Hey, I have to tell you something; I like girls too.’ And he was like, ‘Yeah. I knew you had “Cool for the Summer” out, and I was like: ‘Oh.’”

When Lovato broke the news to her mother, she was equally welcomed with open arms. For Lovato, her parents’ reaction to the news was “very precious and very much appreciated” because not all parents react that way to their children when they come out.

In March 2021, the “Heart Attack” singer shared more details about her identity, confirming that she identifies as pansexual. In an interview with Variety, the 30-year-old shared his views on his sexuality, adding that he doesn’t know which gender he will choose.

“I also didn’t know if I was going to end up with a boy, so I didn’t really see myself getting pregnant,” Lovato said. “I do not know. I’m very fluid right now, and part of the reason why I’m so fluid is because I’m kind of closed off.” In clarifying whether she likes girls or boys, Lovato declared, “Yeah, whatever,” before stating she’s pansexual.
