Demi Lovato Had To Wait Until 25 To Come Out To Her Parents About Her Sexuality

Demi Lovato opens up about one of the bravest things for queer people!

The “Camp Rock” star publicly declared her gender identity in 2021. Since then, she has supported non-binary gender, creating awareness. Although the 30-year-old actress is now confident in her sexuality, there are a few walls she had to break through, including coming out of the closet.

Lovato recently revealed how she opened up to her parents about her sexuality and their reaction.

How Demi Lovato Opened Up About Her Sexuality To Her Parents

As most queer people have stories of opening up about their sexuality to their parents, the “Sorry Not Sorry” singer is no different. In an interview on the “Sirius XM” show, Lovato recalled how she let the cat out of the bag and their reactions.

According to the singer, she grew up as a weirdo but hid her identity because she couldn’t tell anyone. Lovato explained, “I came from a Christian background and grew up queer but didn’t tell people until I felt comfortable with it.”

After being in the closet for a long time, the singer said she came out at the age of 25. “It took me until I was 25 to come out to my mom,” Lovato said. “At the time, I was bisexual, and then I realized I was pansexual. I took some time. It’s kind of funny because I released ‘Cool for the Summer’ before I met my parents.”

The hit song contains lyrics that the Disney star believes hint at his sexuality. A line from the song goes, “Got a test for a cherry/I just gotta eat.”

Although she has begun to reveal her identity, Lovato stated that she does not feel ready to come out. However, that all changed when he finally let the cat out of the bag! “Barney and Friends” describes how he told his parents about his sexuality, telling his stepfather before his mother.

Lovato said, “’Hey, I have to tell you something; I like girls too.’ And he was like, ‘Yeah. I knew you had “Cool for the Summer” out, and I was like: ‘Oh.’”

When Lovato broke the news to her mother, she was equally welcomed with open arms. Recalling how he broke the news to his mother, the “Warrior” singer said, “I was getting ready to go on a date with a girl, and I didn’t know if I was going to have a picture or what was going to happen, and I really liked this girl, and I was like: ‘I think it’s time to tell my mom if it gets serious.'”

He continued, “I sat my mom down and said: ‘I need to talk to you. You know, I’m going on a date with a girl, and I just want you to know and hear from me that I like girls too. She almost started crying and said, ‘I just want you to be happy.'”

For Lovato, her parents’ reaction to the news was “very precious and very much appreciated” because not all parents react that way to their children when they come out.

In March 2021, the “Heart Attack” singer shared more details about her identity, confirming that she identifies as pansexual. In an interview with Variety, the 30-year-old shared his views on his sexuality, adding that he doesn’t know which gender he will choose.

“I also didn’t know if I was going to end up with a boy, so I didn’t really see myself getting pregnant,” Lovato said. “I do not know. I’m very fluid right now, and part of the reason why I’m so fluid is because I’m kind of closed off.” In clarifying whether she likes girls or boys, Lovato declared, “Yeah, whatever,” before stating she’s pansexual.

‘Camp Rock’ Actor Explains Why He Keeps Using ‘He/She’ Pronouns Again

After the Grammy nominee revealed her sexuality, she used the pronouns “they/them”. However, the use of the pronoun was short-lived as he reverted to being known as “He.” Last month, the “This is me” singer detailed her reasons for switching during her interview with GQ Hype Spain.

According to Lovato, she’s tired of explaining her gender identity and differences to others who don’t know. “I always have to educate people and explain why I identify with that pronoun. It’s exhausting,” Lovato told a Spanish news outlet. “I’m just tired. But for that reason, I know it’s important to keep spreading the word.” .”

Although the “Stone Cold” singer uses two different sets of pronouns, she wants a more gender-neutral space that fosters inclusivity and acceptance. For those with multiple talents, creating such an environment is important to accommodate individuals who identify outside of the traditional gender binary.

Through Lovato’s journey of self-discovery and exploration of gender identity, she has gained experience of the challenges that non-binary individuals face. One such challenge is toilet labeling in traditional gender settings. “I face this every day, for example, in public toilets,” shared the songwriter. “Had to access the women’s bathroom, even though I didn’t fully recognize her.”
