Democratic rep renounces DSA membership over antisemitic rally as Rashida Tlaib plays victim

Are you listening, Rashida?

US Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.) renounced his membership in the Socialist Democrats of America on Wednesday following Sunday’s horrific antisemitic rally in Times Square.

“After the brutal terrorist attacks on Israel, including the indiscriminate killing, rape, and kidnapping of innocent men, women, and children, I can no longer associate with an organization that does not want to call for violence in all its forms,” Thanedar , 68, said in a statement.

“Sunday’s hateful and antisemitic rally in New York City, promoted by NYC-DSA, made it impossible for me to continue my coalition. I stand with Israel and its right to defend itself. There is no place for moral turpitude in the face of unsullied evil like we see from Hamas.”

The Times Square demonstration included protesters trampling and burning Israeli flags, while one person was seen flashing an image of a swastika on a mobile phone in mockery of counter-demonstrators in support of the Jewish state.

On Tuesday, the NYC chapter of the DSA issued an apology for promoting the event, but declined to directly condemn the Palestinian terror group.

“No amount of violence, deprivation, or collective punishment will make the daily lives of Palestinians and Israelis safe,” the statement read in part.

Thanedar’s scathing criticism of the DSA stands in contrast to her compatriot, Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), who represented the Indian-born Thanedar’s 13th Congressional District for four years before switching to represent the 12th District after congressional lines were redrawn.

On Wednesday, a day after Palestinian American Tlaib ignored Fox Business reporters who repeatedly asked him to respond to reports of Hamas brutally killing Israeli children — even beheading babies — he issued a self-pitying statement.

“I do not support the targeting and killing of civilians, whether in Israel or Palestine,” he said, according to Politico. “The fact that some would suggest otherwise is offensive and rooted in bigoted assumptions about my faith and ethnicity.”

Tlaib has also drawn criticism for keeping a Palestinian flag outside his House office and referring to Israel as an “apartheid” state.

Despite severing ties with DSA, Thanedar insisted he would continue to fight for key progressive objectives.

“I will continue to work toward the goals that brought me to Congress in the first place: universal health care, workers’ rights, strong labor unions, equity for communities of color, environmental justice and compassionate immigration,” he added.

“My ambitions have not changed at all. I strongly believe that ending my association with DSA serves the interests of my constituents as they expect me to represent them by helping to build a better, fairer world, not fanning the flames of hatred.”

So far, Hamas attacks have killed at least 1,200 people in Israel, including 22 Americans. Another 17 are unknown, according to the Biden administration.

Israel has responded to the atrocity by launching several days of bombardment in the Gaza Strip in preparation for a possible ground invasion.
