Democratic Socialists face seven-figure ‘crisis’ amid Palestinian support that may force dreaded layoffs of staff

The Democratic Socialists of America are red-hot — with finances so dire that some leaders are calling for layoffs and layoffs just like corporate America, The Post has learned.

The DSA – which has led protests against Israel over the Jewish State’s response to the October 7 Hamas terror attack – is deep in a seven-figure hole and desperately needs a way to hold back the red ink, members admit.

“We will cut $500,000 from personnel-related expenses. We will ask volunteers from both the director level and the staff of the consulting unit to have their positions cut and receive layoffs,” according to a proposal submitted by members of the DSA National Political Committee affiliated with the Marxist Bread and Roses caucus.

“If necessary, we will then explore initiating layoffs in accordance with the DSA union contract,” DSA officials said.

The situation seems to be a case of an organization blindly looking for a utopia and claiming to support the working class that contradicts reality — forcing it to balance the budget like the rest of America and even contemplate layoffs hated by unions.

“DSA is in a financial crisis and personnel-related costs account for 58% of our total expenses and 72% of our projected revenue,” DSA members Alex Pellitteri, Kristin Schall and Laura Wadlin wrote in the cost-cutting proposal.

“The current deficit will force us to make a 7-figure budget cut. This requires us to make painful decisions that will affect all levels of the organization. … Given our current financial situation, we do not believe we can have a healthy, democratic and effective organization while spending the amount we do on staff,” they said.

“If necessary, we will then explore initiating layoffs in accordance with the DSA union contract. Either way: The Personnel Committee will be responsible for determining the quantity and type of positions eligible for purchase or layoff, and they will assist with logistics and personnel transition plans,” the group said.

Progressive Jewish activists blame DSA leaders who blindly support Palestinian groups at least in part for the fiscal crisis, saying they have damaged the group’s credibility and lost support by supporting Hamas terrorists.

DSA has long supported the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement against Israel.

“DSA long ago fell into the trap of being radicalized in the name of ‘justice’ until they abandoned the mission of the progressive movement,” said Amanda Berman, founder and executive director of Zioness, a group representing liberal Jews who support Israel.

He said the internal conflict of DSA in 2022 is whether it should withdraw its support to Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-Westchester/Bronx) for visiting Israel caused members to admit they are “bloody activists and financial resources.

“After Hamas’ brutal invasion of Israel on October 7, the DSA redoubled their strategy to deepen antisemitism, thinking it might get them out of the hole,” Berman said. “On the contrary, this evil idea digs them deeper.

“True progressives, whether at the grassroots or in political leadership, will continue to reject this extremist group and its hateful ideas in the name of true justice and equality, including for American Jews,” Berman said.

But the DSA official who recommended the job cuts said the left-wing group should be fueled by the energy surrounding its anti-Israel protests – and seemed puzzled as to why their bottom line was declining.

“But how did this decline in revenue, membership, and overall excitement come about in the first place? This should be a very good time for DSA. We live in a moment when the revitalized labor struggle and the struggle to liberate Palestine are galvanizing so many Americans, especially the young,” said a DSA official in a column in “The Call” published by Bread and Roses.

“Biden’s disastrous policies fueling Israel’s genocide in Gaza have created the kind of space for an independent alternative from the Democratic Party that hasn’t existed since Bernie [Sanders, Vermont senator, former presidential candidate].”
