Democrats’ support among blacks, Hispanics drops to historic lows: poll

Democrats’ long-standing advantage over Republicans between two core constituencies — blacks and Hispanics — has eroded in recent months, new polling data showed Wednesday.

Last year, 66% of black adults identified as Democrats or leaning Democratic while 19% said they were Republicans or Republicans, according to a Gallup poll.

The 47 percentage point spread is the lowest in at least 25 years — and down 19 percentage points from 2020, when 77% of black adults identified as Democrats and only 19% identified as Republicans.

A similar trend can be seen among Hispanics, with 47% calling themselves Democrats and 35% identifying as Republicans.

That 12-point difference is a significant drop from 2021, when 57% of Hispanics identified as Democrats and 26% said they were Republicans, a difference of 31 percentage points.

Meanwhile, Republicans have enjoyed a double-digit lead in identification among white voters in every year since 2013. In 2023, 54% of whites identify as Republican or lean GOP while 38% identify as Democrat or lean Democrat .

The GOP also enjoys a significant advantage among male voters, 52% of whom identify as Republican or lean Republican while 37% choose the Democratic party.

Liberals enjoy a smaller advantage among women (49% to 40%), down from the Democrats’ 17-point advantage (54% to 37%) in 2021.

Among all US adults, 45% identify as Republican while 43% identify as Democrat, a reversal from 2020 when 48% of Americans said they were Democrat and 43% identified as Republican.

Democrats still enjoy large leads among adults with postgraduate degrees (29 percentage points), urban residents (25 percentage points), and those who do not identify themselves with any religion (30 percentage points).

Republicans, meanwhile, have large advantages among weekly congregations (26 percentage points), rural voters (25 percentage points), Protestant or non-Catholic Christians (19 percentage points), and Southerners (14 percentage points).

The Gallup poll sampled 12,145 adults nationwide through 2023 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 1 percentage point.

Among subgroups, polls have a margin of error that typically ranges between plus or minus 2 and 4 percentage points.
