Former first lady Michelle Obama could be “dropped” at next year’s Democratic National Convention and named the party’s presidential candidate to replace Joe Biden, according to Senator Ted Cruz.
The Texas Republican made the baseless allegation on his “Verdict with Ted Cruz” podcast earlier this week, where he discussed the various ways Democrats concerned about Biden’s mental acuity might try to keep the 80-year-old president off the 2024 ticket.
“So here’s the scenario that I think is probably the most likely and the most dangerous,” Cruz said. “In August 2024, the Democratic kingmakers dump Joe Biden and parachute in Michelle Obama.”
“I see this as a very serious danger,” he added.
The senator noted that the August 2024 DNC convention would be held in Chicago — Obama’s hometown — and argued that it was “the best opportunity to field someone” to replace Biden.

Cruz wasn’t sure how the party could force the president from seeking re-election, but suggested that superdelegates — non-pledged Democratic delegates who are free to support the presidential candidate of their choice — might play a role.
He also explored another scenario he believes could happen, but is less likely, in which “the powers that be in the Democratic Party” convince Biden not to run in the next 60 days, opening the door for as many as 10 candidates to fight for the nomination in the primary. .
“If that happens, I think it’s a free for all,” Cruz said, naming Vice President Kamala Harris, California’s Gavin Newsom, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) as possible candidates in that scenario.

“I believe Elizabeth Warren won that primary,” he said.
Cruz argued, however, that crowning Obama at the convention would prevent infighting in the party and be a solution that “unites Democrats.”
“Michelle Obama, because she’s the first lady, has the ability to parachute in on all four and say, ‘Hey, we’re not choosing between you. Y’all can fight it next time,’” Cruz said. “I think in terms of a solution that unites Democrats. There is nothing like it.”
“I also think that Michelle is not very enthusiastic about running for president,” he admitted.
