Derek Chauvin’s family unaware of his condition following prison knife attack: lawyer

Nearly a week after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was stabbed by another inmate at an Arizona federal prison, authorities have yet to release details about the attack or his condition to his family or legal team.

Chauvin’s attorney, Greg Erickson, told The Post on Wednesday his client’s family has been unable to speak with the former cop, who is serving a 21-year sentence for the killing of George Floyd after he knelt on his neck during an arrest, sparking nationwide protests.

“They say he’s stable, but he could also be stable but unconscious, we don’t know,” Erickson said. “That’s all we were told.

“They have stated that they will not give us any updates on his condition until the waiver is signed, but they will not provide the waiver to be signed.”

Chauvin was seriously injured Friday after another inmate at the Tucson Federal Correctional Institution stabbed him around 1:30 p.m., according to the Associated Press.

Sources told ABC News Chauvin is expected to survive.

Erickson said he spoke briefly with officials with the Federal Bureau of Prisons on Monday, who “basically haven’t told me anything because it’s an active investigation.”

Erickson said Chauvin felt he was “fine” in a medium-security federal prison and had not raised any concerns about his safety other than those associated with being a former law enforcement officer at the prison.

“I think he feels threatened 24/7, but I don’t think he’s shown that he feels like he’s in additional danger,” the lawyer told The Post.

Prison workers had to perform “life-saving measures” before Chauvin was hospitalized, the Bureau of Prisons said.

The federal agency added that the alleged attacker had also been taken to hospital, but the perpetrator had not yet been identified.

Chauvin, 47, was convicted in April 2021 of second-degree involuntary manslaughter, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in Floyd’s death. He was sentenced to 22½ years in prison on state charges.

A few months later, he pleaded guilty to federal charges that deprived Floyd of his civil rights and was sentenced to 21 years in prison.

Floyd’s death sparked protests that began in the US and spread around the world over police brutality and racial injustice.

Chauvin recently failed to appeal the second-degree conviction to the US Supreme Court, which dismissed the case.

Erickson said he is exploring other steps he can take to get answers from prison officials before filing something with the court.

“The family is 100% devastated,” Erickson said. “They still don’t have any real information about his medical condition and that’s very unusual.”
