Derek Chauvin’s mom claims she learned of prison stabbing after news outlets: ‘I am worried and scared’

The family of disgraced ex-police officer Derek Chauvin claims they don’t know the details of his jailhouse stabbing that required workers to perform “life-saving measures.”

Chauvin’s mother, Carolyn Pawlenty, found out her son was “severely injured” in the stabbing through the media and had not been contacted by any officials about his condition, according to Alpha News on Saturday afternoon.

“How does this news agency know and her own mother doesn’t know? And that [prison] have an emergency contact number [for me],” Pawlenty told the outlet.

Pawlenty explained she was “worried and scared” about her son’s condition.

“I can’t even think of what to say. I hadn’t slept and was pacing my kitchen and living room floor,” Pawlenty said.

Chauvin’s attorney, Bill Mohrman, said that he has tried to contact the Bureau of Prisons on behalf of his client’s family to learn more about the stabbing but has yet to hear back from the agency.

“We have tried to contact the Bureau of Prisons regarding media reports about Mr. Chauvin and we have not heard back,” Mohrman told the outlet.

Gregory M. Erickson, another of Chauvin’s attorneys, called out the jail for a lack of transparency.

“It appears to indicate a poorly run facility and shows how Derek’s assault was allowed to happen,” Erickson said in a statement on Saturday.

“How family members responsible for Derek’s decisions regarding his personal medical care and his emergency contact were not informed after his actions in the stabbing shows poor institutional procedures and a lack of institutional control,” the lawyer said of the prison.

Chauvin, 47, who served 22.5 years for the death of George Floyd in May 2020, was attacked around 12:30 pm Friday at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Tucson, Ariz.

Prison workers had to perform “life-saving measures” before Chauvin was hospitalized, the Bureau of Prisons said.

The federal agency shared that the assailants were also taken to the hospital, but they have not yet been identified.

Chauvin has since been listed in “stable” condition.

Brian Evans, a spokesman for the Minnesota attorney general, said Saturday they “have heard it [Chauvin] expected to survive.”

Tours at the facility remained suspended until Sunday, according to the prison’s website.

“I have to stay strong for Derek like he did for me. There is no love stronger than a mother’s love,” said Chauvin’s mother to Alpha News.

Pawlenty has made several trips to visit her son at the notoriously violent prison since he has been at the facility since late 2022.

In November 2022, an inmate pulled a gun and tried to shoot a visitor in the head — but failed when the weapon misfired.

In May 2018, former Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar was assaulted in the same prison – and later transferred.

Following Chauvin’s stabbing, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, whose office is prosecuting former police officers over Floyd’s death, said the incident was “sad” for a man who had been convicted of a crime.

“I am saddened to hear that Derek Chauvin was the target of violence,” Ellison said. “He has been duly convicted of his crime and, like any imprisoned individual, he should be able to serve his sentence without fear of reprisal or violence.”

The Arizona stabbing comes just a week after the US Supreme Court rejected Chauvin’s appeal of a second-degree murder conviction.

Chauvin’s lawyers argued that he was denied a fair trial because of the publicity surrounding the case and concerns about potential violence if he is released.

They had advocated keeping their client out of the general prison population and away from other inmates, anticipating that he would become a target.
