Dervla Kirwan made her television debut in 1990 in The Lilac Bus, with Stephanie Beacham, and in 1988 in Troubles, based on the book by Maeve Binchy. Her role as Bernadette Kennedy in the Scottish BBC drama A Time To Dance in 1991 was a major breakthrough in her career, bringing her much popularity and attention. She appeared in Casualty and The Good Sweetheart opposite Nicholas Lyndhurst.
Between 1996 and 1998, she played Assumpta Fitzgerald in Ballykissangle, which had 23 episodes. He reprized this character in The Vicar of Dibley, a British comedy, and most notably in Father Ted.
