DeSantis hopes NH visit helps boost his support to beat Trump

Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign says his dismal polling position is just “a snapshot in time” and that he plans to continue to boost his platform in New Hampshire ahead of the GOP primary.

“DeSantis has more support from state legislators than any other candidate, incl [Donald] Trump, and with every hand he shook and every voter he met in the Granite State, people found Ron DeSantis to be the leader this country needed to reverse the decline of America because he showed up, he never backed down from his principles, and he delivered results for people that he served,” Florida’s GOP governor’s national spokeswoman, Carly Atchinson, told The Post on Monday.

The Republican campaign said it would hit the state with a strategic ground game to outdo the GOP field in winning New Hampshire’s “independent record.”

The campaign said it plans to further highlight DeSantis’ veteran status, given the large number of veterans in the state, and has already been “strategic” in rolling out his economic policies, particularly in New Hampshire.

The White House hopeful will return to the Granite State on Tuesday for a daylong visit with the state’s governor Chris Sununu. The couple will host a town hall together and visit the iconic Red Arrow Diner.

DeSantis’ planned visit marks the Florida governor’s second visit to the state in recent weeks as he steps up his focus on the primary. After serving with Sununu, he will attack the state seven times since the launch of his campaign in May, going to nine of the 10 districts including the North and making 31 campaign stops.

DeSantis has also done more than 25 local media interviews in the state and has a steady stream of endorsements, surpassing Trump’s endorsements from current state legislators.

Still, DeSantis has set his sights on Iowa, which will hold the nation’s first caucus for the 2024 race, and has set out to hit all 99 counties there. His campaign has relocated most of its Florida staff to the Hawkeye state and put up $2 million in advertising. His camp maintains the Jan. 15 caucus will be an opportunity to show voters it’s a two-person Republican primary race between him and former President Trump.

While focusing on Iowa, the 45-year-old governor has seen a steady decline in New Hampshire polls. He slipped nearly 20 points from the 29.3% he posted in April, leading to his current run for second place behind Trump’s 30-point lead, according to the Real Clear Politics average.

The DeSantis campaign argued that based on the calendar, with Iowa first and New Hampshire second, the time to strategically “surge” is closer to polling day. When the primary caucuses and races come, the DeSantis campaign hopes anti-Trump voters will realize the Florida governor has “worked the hardest” and is the only one capable of defeating the former president.

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is beating DeSantis in several polls, according to Real Clear Politics, and is averaging 14.2%, compared to the Florida governor’s 10.4%. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and conservative entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy were not far behind, at 9% and 7.2% respectively.

In winning the New Hampshire independent, the DeSantis campaign showed the Florida governor appealing to 18% of the demographic in his 2022 gubernatorial re-election campaign in Florida and flipping deep-blue Palm Beach County and Miami-Dade County there.

DeSantis himself thinks there is time to make a decision.

After filing for the New Hampshire primary in early October, DeSantis argued that the race for the state’s endorsement was “wide open” and that “there’s a lot to go around,” giving him a chance to ultimately make it the winner.
