Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) has not been shy about getting back at House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), who taunted him over the weekend.
McCarthy blasted DeSantis in an interview Sunday, saying he was “not on the same level as President Trump.”
DeSantis has since embraced that statement, working to fuel an anti-establishment message and aligning himself with what he describes as big spending in Washington, DC.
“We’re supposed to have a red wave in 2022. That’s crashing and burning across the country. [In] Florida, we do. We sent four additional Republican congressmen to them,” DeSantis told Fox Business on Tuesday.
“Since Kevin’s been in Congress, they’ve added trillions and trillions of dollars to the debt, even as we’ve put together a Republican government.”

The protests on Tuesday followed sharper words on Monday during a news conference in Jacksonville.
“[McCarthy] said that we are different. We’re different because in Florida, we’ve run a budget surplus. We have paid off almost 25% of our state debt since I became governor,” DeSantis said.

The 45-year-old Florida governor also credited the Sunshine State Republican for helping the party take back the House of Representatives.
Republicans had a five-seat majority at the beginning of the year, now down to four seats due to the retirement of Utah Representative Chris Stewart. Florida helped score four seats in the lower chamber.

McCarthy’s attitude toward DeSantis comes amid reports that the governor has contacted Freedom Caucus Reps. Chip Roy (R-Texas) and Bob Good (R-Va.) and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and urged them to “keep fighting ,” according to Politico.

Trump, who gave McCarthy a boost during an unprecedented 15-vote marathon to the speakership, also credited her support with helping DeSantis win the governorship in 2018.
McCarty has yet to make an official endorsement in the 2024 contest.
While in Congress from 2013 to 2018, DeSantis was a founding member of the House Freedom Caucus, which has been a thorn in McCarthy’s side.
More than a dozen members from the bloc have walked out against a temporary government funding patch to avoid a shutdown at the end of the month.

Besides being frustrated by DeSantis’ reported encouragement of House GOP rebels, McCarthy appeared keen to avoid alienating Trump.
Back in June, McCarthy infuriated the Trump world by pondering whether the former president was “the strongest to win the election” – a statement he quickly dismissed.
Trump remains the overwhelming 2024 GOP frontrunner with a 43.9-point lead over DeSantis, his closest rival in the latest RealClearPolitics aggregate.
The Republican presidential nominee is preparing for a second debate on September 27 that Trump has said he plans to skip.
