Career
Dewald Brevis is a senior batsman and leg-break bowler, who has been part of teams like Mumbai Indians, North Under-13 and South Africa Under-19. He was signed by Northerns ahead of the 2021–22 domestic cricket season in South Africa in April 2021. He made his Twenty20 debut for South Africa Under-19 in the 2021–22 CSA Regional T20 Knockout tournament on 8 October 2021. He scored 46 off 25 balls with a strike rate of 184 including two fours and four sixes. In November 2021, he was included in the South African squad for the 2022 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in the West Indies. He put in an exemplary performance in the tournament as he scored two centuries and three half-centuries, two of them less than 3 and 4 runs short of a century. He scored a total of 506 runs in six innings surpassing Shikhar Dhawan’s record of 505 runs in seven innings. He also managed to take seven wickets. Although South Africa could only advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament, Brevis was named Player of the Tournament. He represented the Titans Cubs at CSA Cubs Week in February 2022 and scored 0, 25, 41*, 58, and 62 at an average of 46.50. The IPL auction begins nine days after the final innings of the World Cup. Its base price is Rs. 20 lakhs and was bought by Mumbai Indians for Rs 3 crore.
Before the IPL, Brevis played only 8 T20 matches in his career, with 204 runs and 5 wickets to his name. Not part of the 11 in Mumbai Indians’ first two matches, Brevis made his IPL debut against Kolkata Knight Riders on 6 April 2022 in Pune. He scored 29 runs off 19 balls. He took the wicket of Virat Kohli in his first delivery of the IPL, after which he blasted 49 runs off 25 balls against Raja Punjab. Brevis made Rahul Chahar the most expensive leg-spinner in Chahar’s IPL career by 170 overs by hitting four before four sixes in a row making the total 29 runs in the over. Till April 2022, he maintained a strike rate of 155 in IPL 2022.
Controversy
During the match between RCB and Mumbai Indians in IPL 2022, Brevis dismissed Virat Kohli on his first delivery in IPL and made Virat miss his first fifty of IPL 2022 by just 2 runs. Dewald played a googly ball, which hit Virat on the pads. The on-field umpire declared him out, after which Virat resorted to DRS which was flagged in vain. This infuriated Kohli, and he expressed his anger by smashing his bat on the ground. This caused a stir in the media and among fans. Even after the match, Virat met Brevis and said,
Young people. Good, huh! Good first meeting, got me on the first ball.”
Record
- Brevis hit the longest six of 112 meters in IPL 2022.
- Broke Shikhar Dhawan’s world record for most runs in a single U19 World Cup tournament by scoring 506 runs in the U19 WC 2022.
AB de Villiers & Baby AB
Having established himself as Baby AB, Brevis has always been a fan of AB de Villiers. Brevis resembles AB de Villiers not only in terms of looks but also in terms of his attitude and game. In an interview, Brevis revealed,
AB de Villiers has always been one of my role models; from childhood, growing up, me [used to] watch him play,”
AB de Villiers once visited Brevis school, which is also AB de Villiers’ alma mater. Brevis listened intently as he talked about his experiences and little anecdotes. When it was time for AB to leave, Brevis gathered the courage to ask for his number and to his surprise, AB gave him his number. Keeping in mind Brevis’ passion for cricket, AB decided to teach him cricket tips and tricks. He also helped Brevis improve his game by having clean sessions together. Reportedly, AB has also been to Brevis’ house to help him practice. AB went from being his idol to his mentor. In an interview, Brevis stated,
I always wear my AB de Villiers shirt that my mother made for me. [I just love] the way he plays. He has a great mind and he likes to entertain people. From a young age I was the same – I also wanted to entertain and make a big show every time I batted.
He added,
AB is someone I respect and if I can play just 10 percent like him I will be happy. I like that.”
Interestingly, the Brevis SA U19 shirt also features the number ’17’ on the back, which was used by De Villiers on his ODI debut for the Proteas in 2005. In an interview, he revealed,
I met AB for the first time at Affies and we’ve been in touch ever since. I asked him if I could play with no.17 [shirt] and he said ‘sure, play with it. That’s perfect”
