Dhee was born Dheekshitha Venkadeshan on Friday June 26, 1998 in Sydney, Australia. His zodiac sign is Cancer From 2010 to 2016, he studied at Northmead Creative and Performing Arts High School, Australia. Born in a musical family, the Chennai-based singer was inclined towards music since childhood. His mother, grandmother, and even his great-grandmother were famous musicians. Surprisingly, Dhee never pursued professional training in music. In fact, he learned Carnatic music from his mother and grandmother. In an interview, while talking about the beginning of his musical journey, he said,

My mother and grandmother taught Carnatic music but I never sat and studied with them properly as I should have and they never forced me to do it. I have heard about lessons but I have never been trained professionally.”

Dhee grew up listening to a diverse group of artists playing in her home 24/7, which sparked her interest in music. At the age of six, she bought her first album after she discovered the songs of the popular American girl group Destiny’s Child. In an interview, he said,

When I was about six years old, I remember listening to Destiny’s Child in my cousin’s car and it blew my mind. I went and bought myself a copy of their album. It was the first album I bought myself.”

Interested in pursuing a full-time career as a singer, she dropped out of school in 2016 and ventured into the entertainment industry.

Dhee was born into a Sri Lankan Tamil family. His mother, Meenakshi Iyer, is an accomplished Carnatic singer and musician. His father’s name is Venkadeshan, and his brother’s name is Sudheekshanan. Later, her mother married Indian film composer Santhosh Narayanan who mostly worked in the Tamil film industry.

Career

At the age of fourteen, she started her career as a playback singer with the song “Disco Woman” from the Tamil-language horror film Pizza II: Villa (2013). Much appreciated, the song was composed by his stepfather, Santhosh Narayanan.

Her hit song “Naan Nee” from the film ‘Madras’ (2014) earned her nominations for Best Female Playback Singer at the Vijay Awards (2014) and Filmfare Awards South (2015).

She made her debut as a pop singer with the 2021 independent Tamil song “Enjoy Enjaami,” which reached over 100 million views in less than a month on YouTube. The chartbuster was produced by maajja, an initiative led by Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman and popular English rapper, MIA, with the aim of representing South Asia’s rising musical talent to a global audience. While talking about his hit song in an interview, he said,

Enjoy Enjaami talks about a time when we, as humans are not divided and we are one with nature and the song calls that time — calls us to be together.”
