Diamond Dallas was born on April 5, 1956, in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, United States, Joseph Falkinburg was born to Sylvia (née Seigel) and Page Falkinburg Sr. He was raised by his father after his parents divorced and has two siblings.

As a dyslexic, Page faced many challenges throughout his childhood and educational years. He attended St. Joseph in New Jersey, where he was a member of the basketball team. Page then attended Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina for a short time before quitting to work full time.

Diamond Dallas began his career in wrestling management with the American Wrestling Association in 1988. (AWA). He was in charge of the Badd Company tag team as well as wrestlers Colonel DeBeers, Curt Hennig, and Madusa Miceli. Later, Page and Gordon Solie worked as color commentators in Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW).

Page joined World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1991 as manager of The Fabulous Freebirds. That same year, he made his wrestling pay-per-view debut as a tag team partner with Mike Graham at Starrcade. He won his first WCW World Television Championship by defeating Renegade. Page won the United States Heavyweight Championship at the 1997 Starrcade pay-per-view by defeating Curt Hennig. Later, he defended his title by defeating wrestlers such as Chris Benoit, Raven, Dennis Rodman, and Hulk Hogan.

Page won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship in 1999 after defeating Sting, Hogan, and Ric Flair in a Four-Way Dance match at the Spring Break pay-per-view. He made his World Wrestling Federation (WWF) debut against The Undertaker in 2001. His feud with him lasted after Page attacked The Undertaker backstage. He defeated Christian on the January episode of Smackdown to become the WWF European Champion, but he eventually lost the title to William Regal.
