Denise Dowse was born to her father Captain Herbert B Dowse Jr., USN. Herbert served in the US Navy from January 1, 1976 to September 2, 1980 as a commanding officer. She was relieved by Captain Dwight Timm, USN on 2 September. Herbert was born on 12 May 1930 and died on 20 June 1996.
