Actor Diego Luna never expected to return to the role of Cassian Andor after he met his grim fate at the end of 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”
However, the 43-year-old actor is back for a Disney+ prequel series called “Andor.” The first season of the two-part series wrapped last year, led by actor Tony Gilroy.
While there’s more story to explore in the galaxy far, far away, Luna revealed that she’s happy to end her time with Cassian after she wraps up filming season 2 and leaves the franchise in her rearview mirror.
‘Star Wars’ Actor Diego Luna Reveals ‘Andor’ Has Two Seasons For His ‘Mental Health’

In a March 2023 interview with Variety, Diego Luna revealed that the limited series was important to his mental health. “It’s only a two-season show, which is very important for my mental health,” he said. “But knowing this is the end, I want to enjoy it and get the most out of this experience.”
Although fighting the Empire has taken its toll on Cassian, Luna said that she jumped at the chance to return to the character after “Rogue One” because there was so much of Cassian’s backstory worth exploring.
“What this character does in Rogue One is pretty incredible, and what we’re building shows what has to happen in someone’s life to be willing to sacrifice everything,” he said. “For me, it’s always been a story where the people who make a difference, the ones you might call heroes, are just ordinary people doing extraordinary things.”
While some fans were disappointed that the series only had two seasons, Luna was not. Instead, he said that “it’s great to approach the series knowing there’s an ending,” adding, “It didn’t happen.”
‘Andor’ Season 2 Currently Has No Scheduled Release Date

“The new conversation on set with streaming is people talking about the possibilities of the future. Like, ‘Well, maybe there’s a second season or a third season.’ This matter of leaving everything open, I think brings anxiety to the actors who need to be treated,” he explained. “We’re all thinking about something we don’t know.”
While a release date for “Andor” season 2 has yet to be released, actor Tony Gilroy previously told Collider that season 2 will shoot between the start of filming in August 2023, suggesting a possible release in 2024 or 2025.
In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly after the end of season 1, Diego Luna said, “You have to wait a little bit because every season is like four movies, you know? So, it takes time.” He added, “The only thing I can promise is that we will do it with the same respect, determination, intensity and energy.”
Diego Luna Says It’s ‘Impossible’ For Him To Return For Another Prequel Series

In a separate interview on Entertainment Weekly’s Star Wars podcast, Dagobah Dispatch, Diego Luna revealed that he is done with the character of Cassian Andor for good, despite fan speculation about the prequel series.
When asked, Luna quickly shut down the idea that she would return for the prequels. “No, impossible,” he said. “It must be someone else, man. I’m not getting any younger, so it must be someone else.”
Although he doesn’t plan to appear in any future Star Wars projects, he still says he’s had a “wonderful journey” with his character. “For me, this is it. It’s been a beautiful journey now because I have 24 episodes, 24 shorter films, to tell Cassian’s origin story and how he became the man we met in Rogue One,” he said.
Luna Reveals That She Is Interested In Returning To Theater Work

So what is he planning now? As he told Variety, he plans to slow down and leave the world of streaming behind for a while. Instead of planning a rebellion and shooting a blaster, Diego Luna admits that he is interested in returning to the theater.
Although he has yet to commit to any projects, he jokes, “There’s another thing I love about theater: you sleep every night in the same bed.”
Fortunately for Star Wars fans, there are still plenty of other Disney+ shows in the works, including “Ahsoka,” “The Acolyte” and “Skeleton Crew.” Season 3 of “The Mandalorian” is currently streaming.
