Director Christopher Landon Call It Quits With The ‘Scream’ Franchise

Another bit the dust in the “Scream” franchise as its seventh installment saw acclaimed director Christopher Landon exit the upcoming production.

The drama surrounding the horror series continues after two unexpected exits, with Landon marking the film’s third interruption since its announcement. The filmmaker recently opened up about his departure, hinting that behind-the-scenes events turned his job into a nightmare.

Christopher Landon Says He’s Heartbroken For Everyone Involved In ‘Scream 7’

In his latest social media post, Landon explained that he has completed his commitment to the “Scream” series. He expressed his displeasure with the production at X, sharing two long tweets with the first reading:

“I feel like now is the right time to officially announce my exit from Scream 7 last week. This will frustrate some people and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart really breaks for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on.”

The director declined to share what prompted his decision to leave the horror franchise; however, he hinted it might have something to do with the studio’s decision to fire one of its actors. Echoing his hopes for “Scream 7” in his second tweet, Landon write:

“I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope Wes’ legacy thrives and transcends the din of a divided world. What she and Kevin have created is extraordinary, and I am honored to bask in even the briefest moment in their light.”

The announcement of her departure follows the ouster of Melissa Barrera from the horror franchise over her social media posts about the Israel-Hamas conflict. Following the news of her departure, Landon stated that she was not to blame in a since-deleted post before Spyglass Media released a statement revealing their reasons for letting the actress go.

“Spyglass’s position is crystal clear: We do not tolerate antisemitism or hate speech of any kind, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, distortions of the Holocaust, or anything that blatantly crosses the line into speech. hatred,” their statement said. .

However, their words only made Barrera double down on his decision to talk about the Israel-Hamas conflict. He refuted Spyglass Media’s statement on his Instagram Story, stating he did not express any antisemitic or Islamophobic views.

“I condemn any kind of hatred and prejudice against any group of people,” he wrote before explaining why he tackled the sensitive topic. According to Barrera, he feels “a responsibility to have a platform that allows me the privilege of being heard, and therefore, I have tried to use it to raise awareness about issues I care about and lend my voice to those in need.”

Barrera is an integral part of the “Scream” franchise with co-star Jenna Ortega. While the former was fired for his views, the latter willingly left the horror series due to scheduling conflicts with other hit projects.

Ortega is unable to reprise her iconic role in the horror series, as she is scheduled to be in Ireland by April 2024. While the script for “Scream VIII” is still in production, the actress will be filming the second season of Netflix’s hit series “Wednesday,” in which she plays title.

Christopher Landon Replaces Former Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett

Before his recent departure, Landon made a splash in August by taking over the director’s chair from Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. The former director, known as Radio Silence, is behind the highly successful 2022 horror franchise revival and the 2023 hit “Scream VI.”

Radio Silence is reportedly exiting the franchise’s seventh installment to focus on a new original horror project for Universal Pictures. However, the deal was put on hold due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.

Although Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett no longer serve as directors, they will remain in the seventh installment as executive producers along with Chad Villela. As for their successors, many were excited when Landon took the lead, given his accomplishments in the horror genre.

The 48-year-old has directed such hits as “Happy Death Day” and its sequel, “Happy Death Day 2 U.” He also helmed the body-swapping horror comedy “Freaky” and directed this year’s supernatural comedy original feature on Netflix, “We Have a Ghost.”
