A 20-year-old Michigan mother has been charged with assault after police say she punched a grocery store clerk in front of her 1-year-old daughter.
Surveillance video captured the incident Tuesday at a Kroger store in St. Clair Shores.
Police said Shelby Parham was in the check-out area by herself before walking up to a 49-year-old clerk and punching her in the face.
The woman fell to the ground, passed out, and suffered a head injury.
“It is very clear. There is no question about who is at fault here,” said St. Clair Shores Gordon Carrier to FOX 2 Detroit.
Investigators said several words were exchanged between Parham and the clerk after his electronic benefit transfer, also known as a Bridge card, didn’t have enough money to cover what he called.
Parham reportedly asked for help crossing some items off the register, but the clerk was unable to help him at the time.
“The worker walked away from him. The defendant got upset and followed him and hit him in the face,” said Carrier.
Parham’s 1-year-old daughter was sitting in her shopping cart when the incident happened.

Police arrived at the store within minutes and arrested Parham.
He was given a $1,000 bond and is out of custody, but he could face up to a year in prison if convicted of the crime.
The unidentified store clerk suffered a black eye, had a headache, and was taking time off from work to recover at home.
Kroger did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
