Doberman with zip-tie around snout rescued and adopted by Indiana police officer

An Indiana dog found abandoned with a zip tie around its muzzle has found a new home — with the police officer who rescued it.

Zeus, a large black and brown Doberman, was found running and alone by concerned residents in South Bend on Friday with a tightly tied plastic collar preventing him from opening his mouth.

When the Samaritans were unable to catch the dog, they called the South Bend Police Department for help.

Officer Stephanie Northcutt arrived and managed to get the frightened dog under control, then dropped into a crouch and approached him with her arms outstretched.

“You are so beautiful, do you believe me?” he can be heard telling the dog in a video from the rescue released by police.

After a few nervous glances, Zeus finally leaned over to sniff Northcutt’s hand, allowing him to hold his rope.

Someone else who was on hand then approached with a pair of scissors and ripped off the tie, much to Zeus’ relief.

Footage from later shows the dog with clear ligature marks around its muzzle, but nuzzled Northcutt lovingly and allowed her to pet him before being loaded into a car to be transported to South Bend Animal Rescue.

“We are friends? Friends? are you okay. you’re so beautiful,” Northcutt said.

“Officer Northcutt said he knew the moment he saw the puppy that he was the perfect addition to his family,” police said in a Facebook post.

“The dog, now named Zeus, spent some time socializing with Northcutt’s other dogs before Officer Northcutt made it official.”

Despite the condition he was found in, police said Zeus is not expected to suffer any lasting physical injuries from the draw.

Zeus isn’t the first canine officer Northcutt has adopted after a call — he previously welcomed another dog he rescued from an abusive situation while on duty.

“He joked that dispatchers at St. Joseph County 9-1-1 should stop sending him to animal calls because he would soon run out of room in his house,” South Bend Police said.

It’s still unclear what led to Zeus’ dangerous situation, but police say they’re continuing to investigate.
