The little dog, who weighed only about 30 pounds when found, will stay with a veterinarian throughout her pregnancy, according to the organization, which said it will send updates as Connie develops.

Connie was rescued after US Coast Guard Officer Ryan McMahon and his team heard barking coming from the shipping container.

A crane was used to bring the container to the men, and Connie emerged, believed to have spent eight days inside without food or water.

“As soon as we opened it, we could see the little dog’s face poking out. He was there, like he knew we were going to be there to open it,” McMahon, a petty officer 2nd class, told the Associated Press.

“And he’s just, he’s not scared or anything. He seemed happy more than anything to be out of that dark room and in the arms of someone who was going to take care of him,” McMahon said.

The Coast Guard is not sure how the dog got into the container with a group of garbage vehicles, but believe he may have been in the dumpster and accidentally got into the container.

McMahon said he was thankful he noticed the dog’s barking before he was loaded onto the cargo ship.

After her pregnancy, Connie hopes to find a forever home in the DC area.
