Every dog has its day – in court.
A dog in Brazil has successfully sued its owner after the cruel man was caught on camera beating it with a stick.
After the disturbing footage came to light in June, an animal rights group called the Fauna Group for Animal Protection rescued the dog from its owner, who was arrested for the abuse, according to CEN.
The group’s lawyers then reportedly took the unusual step of filing a lawsuit against the suspect on behalf of the dog, named Tokinho.
The court accepted the case, and the dog abuser agreed to pay a $410 fine in a plea bargain to avoid a criminal trial on charges that could have landed him in jail for a year.
However, Tokinho’s lawyer believes that the owner got off too easily and plans to appeal the decision, arguing that plea agreements should only be honored in non-violent cases, according to the report.
Tokinho has since been adopted by two teachers who named him Floquinho, which means snowflake.

“On my birthday, we had just adopted him and a friend of mine gave me a pastry in the shape of Floquinho and Minnie. [her other dog] as a gift,” said his new master Marcia.
The woman stated that Floquinho was still afraid of his abuse and was easily frightened by sudden movements.
