Dog who survived 72 days in mountains after owner’s death is regaining weight, back on hiking trails

A loyal dog that survived more than 10 weeks by its owner who died of hypothermia while hiking in the Colorado mountains has regained most of the weight it lost during its ordeal and is back on track, the family said Thursday.

Rich Moore, 71, of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, set out with his Jack Russell terrier named Finney to climb Blackhead Peak on August 19, but did not return home.

A search for several days between the summit and his vehicle was unsuccessful.

A hunter found her body and a fiercely protective Finney in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado on Oct. 30.

Finney had lost about half his body weight and his ribs were visible, officials said.

Less than three weeks later, “Finney is doing well,” Moore’s wife, Dana Holby, told The Associated Press on Thursday. “He has gained almost all of his weight back and his strength is almost back to normal. He is a miracle dog.”

He did have an injury to his muzzle which may have left a scar, Holby said.

“He’s now 3, very clingy and won’t let me out of his sight,” Holby said. “His appetite has subsided, but at first he couldn’t get enough to eat and wanted food at all times of the day and night.”

Finney’s story of survival has made him famous on hiking trails around Pagosa Springs, Holby said.

“People say, ‘Is that Finney?'” to which Holby enthusiastically replies, “Yes!”

“He was a comfort to me and a great companion on hikes,” covering 4 to 5 miles a day, Holby said.

“I know he’s with Rich to the end and somehow that should be a comfort. I don’t know how he does it, but he’s there when he needs him,” said Holby.
