Less than a month ago, King admitted to being drunk when he mumbled the lyrics to Parton’s 2001 hit “Marry Me” on stage. Amid stumbling over a few lines, the 34-year-old sings, “I don’t know the lyrics to this thing in this f——g town/Don’t tell Dolly cause it’s her birthday.”

King later joked, “I’m not gonna lie, you bought a ticket for this s—t? You can’t get your money back.”

Following the concert mishap, the Grand Ole Opry, known for its strict no-obscenity policy, issued an apology expressing “deep regret” for the “language used” during the singer’s Jan. 19 performance.

Now, Parton has responded to criticism of King’s lewd remarks at his 78th birthday bash, stating:

“Elle is truly a great artist. She’s a great girl, and she’s been through a lot lately. He just drank too much.”

The “Jolene” hitmaker, while speaking to Extra, encouraged viewers to focus on the good, saying, “So let’s forgive that and forget it and move on, because she feels worse than anybody.”

News of the incident started trending after a clip of King’s performance was shared by a contestant who wrote, “I think Elle King just ended her career. I can’t imagine disrespecting Dolly at the Grand Ole Opry on Dolly’s birthday. I hope Elle gets the help she needs because this doesn’t pass the vibration check.”

One attendee, who saw the performance in person, insisted it was “much worse than this video clip.” They also claimed, “The Grand Ole Opry is a family show. People in front of us have kids and come out.”

The recent drunken performance followed King’s hosting of “Live Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash,” where he also appeared drunk.

Although King has not publicly commented on the incident at the famous country music hall, he postponed a series of shows six days later. The delay begins with his performance on Friday, January 24 at Billy Bob’s Texas, a music venue in Fort Worth, Texas.

Announcing the update, the venue shared in a statement, “The Elle King event, originally for Friday. 26/1/24 has been rescheduled to Sat. 9/21/24 @ 10 PM. Original event tickets will be accepted for the new date. Refunds are available at the point of purchase. Thank you for understanding!”

While no reason was given for the rescheduling, it’s worth noting that the “Exes and Ohs” frontman has a history of substance abuse. In 2020, he revealed that he used drugs and alcohol to “mask” his emotions following his disastrous marriage.
