The actor had the honor of presenting at the 2023 Writers Guild Awards earlier this week. He presented producer Paul Simmons with the Herb Sargent Award for Comedy Excellence.
During his speech about currents Atlanta executive producer, he revealed that he and Sargent had worked with Chase. Glover is on Community and Sargent when he created the “Weekend Update” segment for the popular sketch show.
In an awkward moment, Glover joked. “Chevy Chase once called Herb one of the funniest writers working in television. Chevy Chase once called me – You know what? This is about Paul.”
The actor quickly continued his speech but the room was filled with laughter.

In 2009 when Chase joined the cast of Community, Glover was a main cast member and went on to become the show’s breakout star. Glover admitted that working with Chase was challenging because the old-fashioned actor would make some bad jokes about Glover’s skin color.
New Yorkers profiled the show in 2018 and it emerged that Chase had said to Glover on set, “People think you’re funnier because you’re Black.” This prompted show creator Dan Harmon to apologize to Glover.
He claimed that Chase’s behavior was out of jealousy over the more talented Glover. “Chevy was the first to realize how great Donald was, and the way he expressed his jealousy was to try to dump Donald,” she told the publication.

Harmon shared that he also remembers, “apologising to Donald after a very rough night with Chevy saying it’s not PC,” and of course, “Donald said, ‘I’m not worried about it,'” noting that Chase is a low-key person which is absurd and knows better.
Glover takes the time with a grain of salt and tells New Yorkers in the same interview. “I just see Chevy as fighting time—a true artist has to be OK with his reign ending,” Glover says confidently.
Glover went on to say, “I can’t help him if he’s thrashing around in the water. But I knew there was a human in there somewhere—he was almost too human.”

The actor also joked about actress Lena Dunham’s frequent use of racial slurs on set female. During the talk, which lasted nearly eight minutes, he said: “I asked Lena … ‘Hey, what made you decide to work with Paul?’ And he said, ‘Honestly, it’s n— let me do whatever I want.'”
Some people laugh but feel awkward even when we watch it. He went on to recall the moment, “I remember thinking two things: One, Lena used the N-word very liberally with me. Who does she think she is, Chevy Chase? … And two, that’s the kind of producer I want.”
A member of Lena’s team has come out to deny the allegations against her and instead said it was basically a bad joke.
The quote was given to L.A. Times. “Donald Glover told a joke referring to Lena Dunham at last night’s WGA Awards, which included, as an effect, language that Lena has never used and will never use.”
